I find the social service funda a paradox .. it is something that should be done without self interest .. it looks odd to me .. if you are going for social service .. just for the sake of some brownie points in the interview.. hope thats not the case

If it can be done without self interest .... nothing like it .. thats the best way !!

But self interest or no interest .. Social Service does give you those extra points in an interview !! Now how he does it will depend on the individual.

Same is true when it comes to extra curricular, hobbies etc.
