Is age a factor for placements post MBA? - 22-10-2006, 01:09 AM

Hi PUYs,
I am a 24 year old sales exec working in dubai.i have had decent acads while at school, unfortunately had to drop out of an eng course due to finnacial constraints, now doing bba from here in dubai.now my work contract expires by 2008 and i want to do an mba from a good b-school in india.I have certain dubts regarding this .Now if I were to end up in a good b-school will the placements be a hurdle considering the fact that my age could be 28 or 29 or even 30? my work exp by then should be around 5 years

actually had posted this query in the career discussions thread ,got some decent responses and the vishy an expert PGite suggested i try in this section and i guess it makes sense since alumnis from different schools would be the best people to give a good reply to this

any sort of meaningful advice would be welcome

to get a better understanding u could take a look at this threadhttp://www.pagalguy.com/forum/career...-eligible.html (help plz am i eligible?)

thanks

Hi,
Depends a lot on your profile, in my college there are people ages 32 in the first year itself , and in the senior batch , there is a person aged 34 ... will let you know for sure , after seeing his placement which will be in december ...

regards

shailesh

Well,

Age is definetely a factor, and very important too.

I tell you bout wat happened at IMI and since I'm the secretary of the placement committee, I can tell ya this with lotsa conviction since I heard it directly from the horse's mouth.

While interacting with the top executives of the companies like ITC, J P Morgan, Asian Paints, E&Y, Genpact, Ranbaxy, Dr. Reddy's, Heinz, Pepsi and so on...which are regular recruiter on our campus, we came to know that the company always has the requirements across the levels. So, they look for the different ppl with different profile and offere different package too!

For example, if ITC comes and look for entry level position in the rural area, they know that a person with 4-5 years of work-ex in some good company wouldn't put his heart into the job since it won't sound challenging for them whereas the same job extracts a lot of exitment from the fresher's since he/she will be working for "The First Job".

At the same time, the same company offering a lateral positions, wud look for someone who can shoulder more responsibility and hence with some relevant experience. Comapnies like Maruti, Tata Motors, Infy, City, HSBC and so on...also come with lateral offerings wherein they offer Managerial positions (a level above than usual Asst. Mgr. post) and they also give higher package.

So, though age matters, you won't be denied of a good job, at least on the A to A+ Bschool. And this is the precise reason why bschools prefer mix profile of students. The reason is to offer one stop shop for the comapny.

So, it depends on wat kinda profile you want to get into. Only disadvantage that the age brings is that the switching the profile becomes very difficult, though this ain't the eternal truth.

Hi Ajay,

Age can be a factor at some B schools.. specially in India.. however if u manage to get urself in a top 10 Bschool then i think ur age will not be an issue. Considering u would have 5 yrs work ex u can even look at schools like ISB, IIM A's or XLRIs Executive program. These would suit u more than other B schools.. avg age in Indian bschools (at the time of joining) would be around 24 or 25.. this might make u feel like a old man..

So my suggestion is try out the one yr B schools in India or better (since u have intl exposure) go for an MBA from schools like INSEAD, IMD, or any one of the US bschools..

Well,

Lateral placements are the placements of the ppl with at least 2 years of work ex before joining the bschool. These ppl are offered different positions and different pay package compared to the normal recruits.

lateral placements depends on the profile of the students at the Bschool and it has hardly anything to do with the rank.

If the institute has 50% students with work ex and that too 2+ years, then there would be high no. of lateral placements whereas the institute which admits more freshers compared to work-ex ppl, laterals are almost negligible.

Also, lateral placements start before your Day zero placement week. Like, at IMI, placement week will start in Dec but comapnies have already started hitting the campus for Laterals.

I guess, this will clear some of your doubts, if not all.

Hi, age shd not be a factor if u get thru ina gud A+ school clearing CAT/XAT etc. you will be eligible for laterals.
however what may be an issue is your BBA status. most top Indian schools may not recognize the UAE BBA as many of them are affiliated to a UK/US univ witha study center in Dubai etc. pls confirm the eligibility status.
also your exp will be valued by co.s in Gulf for recruitments or by those co,.s who have gulf oprns. keep option of SPJain-dubai open. am sure by that time many other gud schools will have dubai/UAE campuses with easier entry norms than Indian campuses. also recruitments there will be gulf focussed.
if u have decent Arabic language exposure you will be hot property in Gulf plcmt market with your experience, whether you do MBA from India or gulf campus.

prepare hard for CAT/exams and increase business awareness.
