Ankit,

In the current economic environment, an IT firm would be willing to give its left arm for business development employees who can get in more work. So if your choices are limited to the three that you've mentioned, I'd say adding Marketing might be good. You'd have a have a flair for selling though. Otherwise it'll just remain a feather in your cap that you won't leverage upon.

By 'Operations', if you mean general Operations (i.e. not IT related), then it's a totally different ball game as it applies to any industry. So can't say much about it unless you provide more details.

Thanks alot for your reply,
Details about me: I've graduated with BCA and have joined MBA. Now i've completed 1st year so i need to choose specialization. College is offering dual specialization Marketing, IT, Operations, HR, Finance. So which combination works best, what job profile are associated with various combinations like:
Finance+IT, Marketing+IT, Marketing+ Operations, IT+Operations. I cant opt for HR.
One question is that being associated with IT will help growth or not. I'm very confused so please help me select the specialization.

Thanks & Regards.

Cheers
Ankit

You have to decide between the industry and the function that you want to target after your MBA. For instance, if you want to continue in the IT industry but not as a technical person, then the IT+Marketing combo would help you in a business development role (i.e. pitching to prospective clients for new projects, like a new custom developed business module or an out of the box application implementation). You would still be using your prior IT experience but in a broader sense.

Similarly, Finance + IT would give you the opportunity to be effective in a commercial role. Continuing with the prior example, you'd still be in the IT industry, but probably in an Corporate Finance function or an Accounting function.

You have to decide what you want to do and choose accordingly.

Also, to respond to your other thread on career change in 2 yr vs 1 yr programs, it's possible in either case. Your past experience, your networking skills, the state of the economy when you graduate and sheer luck will play a joint role in the final outcome.

Re: MBA Systems - Have done MBA in Systems and is rocking today... - 16-06-2009, 04:00 PM

I've done my BCA and now want to do MBA in systems as i want to stay in IT field. but people are saying that it won't be a good choice as the finance or marketing would have a better scope and in IT field MCA or B.TECH would be preferred than MBA in systems.. Right now i'm going through GDPIs of several institutes and my choice is EIILM (Kolkata).. so plz help me to make decision i'm in a fix... Thanks in advance to all...

Re: MBA Systems - Have done MBA in Systems and is rocking today... - 23-06-2009, 08:16 PM

hi my name is pankaj jain. i am BE computer engineering passed out in 2009 , i want to do MBA in systems . but have a question . if a person having a work ex of 2-3 years in IT industry will he have a better chance of getting placed , is work ex very much required in MBA systems as it a mix of managerial skill + technological kownledge . and i think a person who has worked in IT industry, he has definitely worked on projects , he will have better idea of which technical thinks to be done in much efficient way than a fresher ,which technology should be implemented etc . i am confused should i go for MBA systems after work ex or as a fresher . currently i am not having any job offer at hand and looking to give cat 2009.

pls help me out.

i want anurag as well as sajal to answer my question whether they did MBA in systems as a fresher or having work ex. what any one of u or both advise me to do .

Help->mca+mba - 25-06-2009, 12:57 PM

Hi,
I am Avijit...i have completed MCA in 2007. And have worked in a software firm in Bangalore for 2 years now. Am planning to persue MBA systems. But am facing some auckward problems:-
1. Due to this economic slowdown, i have lost my job and am forced to prepare for higher education. How much will a 1 year gap year highlight with respect to MBA?
2. I have found that, there are no candidates in near future who have done MCA and then completed MBA. Mostly its BTech + MBA and no where its MBA + MBA. Is there any such thing that B-Schools dont prefer MCA's.

I would appreciate if any one helps me regarding this?
Thanks

Perfect match with your work ex and interest. Would provide good growth options!

1 yr gap in MBA preparation wont be a hindrance after your work ex of 2 years. You can always say in the interview that while preparing for MBA entrance exams you were working on your own doing some small IT projects at your home. This wont be any issue provided you get good percentile in entrance exams.

Myth. There are many aspirants who go for 2 year MBA after M Tech, MCA and even MBA. There is no preference only for graduates. Post Graduates also get admit only if they justify their career goals and MBA aspirantions. Many of my friends who did MCA also did MBA from leading B schools in India. So dp not worry at all about this factor. MCA+work ex actually is perfect for a management profile post MBA.

All the best

Re: MBA Systems - Have done MBA in Systems and is rocking today... - 26-06-2009, 01:16 PM

I have done my BE Computers and have an experience of 1.5 years in IT industry!!! I have scored 119 marks in CET09. Getting into gud collge is difficult. Also I have resigned my job for entrance prepration. Do you think that i should go for MBA? or should i wait and search for another job and appear next year for MBA?
Also my main interest is Computers so i want to take admission for Systems or IT. What is the difference between MBA Systems and MBA IT? Also wat is course structure for MCM? is MCM worth doing after BE Computers?

Also suggest good collges for MBA Systems/ MBA IT

Thank you

Perfect match.

Preparing for entrance after resigning means you want to go for MBA. If you are still in a dilemma, then why resign?

Quote:

Resigning for preparation is never a good solution as far as my opinion is concerned. You can always take some time out from your daily schedules and prepare for the exams. Spend less time in usual pastime activities, check less scraps on orkut, watch less TV and you can get sufficient time for exam preparation. Leaving a job is opportunity lost for gaining more work ex before joining MBA.

Anyway, preparation for MBA and search for job can happen simultaneously, right? I dont see any challenge in this becoz neither someone studies 20 hrs a day and nor someone searches for jobs 20 hrs a day. Find a balance and do both activities. Hope you get both.

None. Both are same. Potato is called Aloo as well as Batata, internal material remains the same.

Quote:

It's also worth doing after BE. But MBA is altogether a different professional course, hence would suggest to take that for better career growth.

All the best.
