Hi movernshaker,
I received the admission decision on 13th Dec and the admissions packet in the first week of Jan. So, calculate your time acc. by taking into consideration that duration for me included the holiday season of xmas nd new year.
As regards paying the initial deposit, its not USD 1000 but USD 1100 (1000 + 100-orientation fee). This can be paid online through OPUS using the concept of routing no. Just like you, I was also amused how does this option work as it doesn't make use of credit card but after some analysis have been able to successfully submit the amount online. All it requires is that you possess a savings/checking bank account. Then, call up the customer support or visit your bank and ask them the bank's (not branch's) "Routing Number" and tell them that you want to pay some deposit from your savings account (in USD) into US geography. At times, the bank's routing number could be different for payment for different locations within US, e.g, HDFC bank has 2 routing nos. for US - one for new york and the other for rest of US. So, be specific that you want your payment within Georgia state of US.
Now, here are some words of caution:
1. There is every possibility that the customer support person doesn't understand the concept of routing no. and he ends up telling you the swift code. This is because the concept of routing no. is not very prevalent here in India. Remember: SWIFT CODE and ROUTING NO. are 2 different things.
2. The transfer of money by using routing no. is entirely different from wire transfer/outbound remittance. This is again a concept which customer support person might take you into.
Both above points happened when I contacted HDFC's customer support!!! That's y telling u.
Once you have the "Routing No." with you, simply go on the online payment option within OPUS and put the bank's routing no. and your saving bank account details. This much information is enough to submit the deposit.
If there is any confusion in executing this process, please get back to me.
Also, there are other offline methods of transferring money. The most prominent of them is the wire transfer/outbound remittance for which you will have to visit your bank personally.
