Not sure if this has been up for discussion.
But here comes -
MICA is accepting GMAT scores!
Yay. Yay+1 acutally
Have a look at the site, no mention of any damn NRI etcetra this time around. Freaking good news for me atleast. Though not sure if I have enough time though.
Anyways, this time around the mica thread seems dead. Where the hell are the people.

Quite a few people have been asking me about gyaan about the concentrations out here... So here it comes. Of course, to see how all the roles actually function in the industry, please check out the first page of this thread. Concentration Gyaan: Media @ MICA
MICA is the best destination in India if you want to learn about media marketing. We have a lot of tools out here that you won't find any place else. Like the TAM ratings, dedicated media faculty and all.
Plus, many of our recruiters are from TV (SET), Radio (BBC, Radio Mirchi, BigFM), Newspapers (DNA, HT), websites (too many!).
Basically, a media house is divided into content (making the actual programmes - acting, directing, producting, etc) and marketing (what we do!)
There are subjects like Broadcast media, Branded Entertainment, New media, Media Management, etc.
You get to know about the industry, and MICA's courses for media management are unparallelled. The resources that the digital library has for MM is very VERY vast.
You may also end up in an advertising agency as a media buyer. I've told you before what a media buyer or planner does - buying of media space. How much of the ad do you show on print, radio, Out-of-home, TV, or other spaces? And how much will you pay? This is quite essentially, what a media planner and buyer does.
You may also tell a company where to put their advertising spends. Consulting, basically ;D
Lots od research happens at MICA too. Check this for details ( Centres of Excellence - Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad).
So that's it about media, really. Just a gist. MARKETING RESEARCH
Think of MR this way. Before a major marketing decision, you'd want to find out whether the consumers will want the change. For example, before launching a mint-flavoured drink (sorry for using the Corporate example ) you'd first identify a potential target audience and then do a research among them. If the results are positive, then yes, you'd go in for the product. MR plays an incredibly important role in marketing.
At MICA, if you take up MR, you'll be doing Quantitative as well as Qualitative research. You get hands-on experience with some of the most contemporary MR software. The profs here are MR experts.
After doing MR, chances are you will join an agency like AC Neilsen or ORG-MARG (yes, the same fellers who come out with all those surveys!)
A few companies like HUL, P&G have a Consumer insight mining division which is apparently filled with MICAns
But we warned, these compaies recruit frm the MR agencies, and not directly from the institute... Atleast not for this profile.
Also, MR is an conc that gives u experience in various fields. It's a very flexible vocation in the sense that its possible to shift to consultancy or BM from MR.
And also, what I've noticed is, no matter what your inclination when you go for summer internships, most people end up doing some sort of research or the other - the projects are such.
So that's it about MM and MR... Tomorrow I'll try to have some BM and AP gyaan up!

THINGS THAT HAPPEN AT MICA!
I guess a small post about things that happen at MICA would be cool too MICA EVENTS
It's not all about acads here at MICA! No friggin' way! Extra currics rule the roost, and it's fair to say we have more than most BSchools...
MICANVAS: The annual brand management fest, which gets bigger every year. Lots of innovative events, concerts, a post-MICANVAS party for everyone... The campus is abuzz for four days... This year, MICANVAS went international!
SANKALP: The annual theater fest which is the pulse of any MICAn. Started by two people who have their own theater company called Evam in Chennai now, Sankalp too is getting bigger. Sankalp stages plays in late December to Ahmedabad audiences, and this year, we're going to Mumbai. On the Sankalp team, you can be a part of lights, music, sounds, logistics, etc, all of which are very professionally done, not to mention sales, marketing and of course, acting
Other than this, we're starting a musical community called MIChord which for now consists of our band \m/ and whoever wants to be a part of the musical fraternity. For example, during MICANVAS, the band played, and on the next day, we did a fusion piece.
Film screenings happen regularly, thanks to our in-house entertainment group, Trinetra, who also arrange for the parties that happen on campus. And when parties happen, woohoo!
SPORTS: Volleyball, baddy, tennis, TT, badminton. It's not unusual to find people walking around in the early morning. MICA, being far away from the city, is in a quiet place and the air is wonderful here. Also late-night matters-of-the-heart walks OTHER CRAZY THINGS:
Hanging out at the Chota canteen
We don't spend too much time in front of our comps
Frequent trips to Fun Republic...
The library actually has a lot of cool stuff!
Birthday dunkings!
More coming up... Life @ MICA is one hell of an experience!

devang.
P.S. i dont know if in the capacity of a student, you'd be having any of ths info or not. i am just trying my luck at every place i can. | Devang...
Quite a few companies do come down to campus... Some companies like Arvind Brands, Godrej, Titan, CavinKare, etc. come exclusively for BM students. Some media companies like HT may also take you - but for Bm related jobs.
And as for the role, well it really varies. Some may get a branding role, some may be doing sales for a year before doing BM...
Don't worry too much about placements, Devang... MICA is on it's way to crossing double-figures in placements permanently... Just focus on getting here... And I know you want to get into this place Quote: |

Refer to my post on the first page of this thread... That will give you a little more help into what MICA are looking for. Quote:

btw im looking at retail communications!..hows the course there? | My percentile was 94.66 overall with the splits as VA: 95.33, QA: 92, DI: 72. Nothing to write home about, you'll agree
Like I said before, getting a call from MICA is seriously no big deal... Converting it is slightly more difficult!
As for likes and dislikes... I've seen all sorts... Some people go with the general stuff (dislike dishonesty, etc) to extremes (dislike idli-sambhar ). See, as long as you can justify what you write, it's fine. Just don't write total crap or something controversial
The Retail Communications Course here is real good. It's a 15 month course, which teaches you all about, well, Retail Communications
It's a new course, but the placements are fairly good. There are national and international retail immersions during the course itself to let you get a hang of the real world. Check the details out on the MICA website.
If you want more details... Ask, I'll try to get them for you.
