Re: NRI Admission to IIM - 27-09-2007, 04:51 PM

Hi,

I am also planning to apply to IIM - A, B, C this year-end for PGP 2008-10 courses, via the GMAT route. I have been an NRI half my life, having spent 11 of my 22.5 years in the UAE. I have done my BE in Electrx & Instru from BITS, Pilani - Dubai and at this time have 1+ year work-ex with a MNC in Oil & Gas Construction, in dubai.

Scored a 740 on my GMAT last year and have good acads / extra-curricualrs.

Anyone willing to share some thoughts / ideas ??

Would really appreciate...

Thx

Meet

Good to know that there is someone else applying as well. Do you know if all three require GD/PI, and if they are around the same time. And around when do they invite you for the GD/PI after you send in your applications, cause there is 2 months between the deadline for Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Hi Sandipan,

Even I am planning to apply for IIM-A,B,C for the PGP with my GMAT...
Well, I believe all require GD/PI and I remember reading it somewhere on their website that it will be scheduled in March. Will scan the website again to confirm it..

Thanks for the info. What is your profile like? I've been trying desperately to get myself ready to give the GMAT. Really envy the guys who have taken it already. Applying this year was a very recent decision. I will be taking it on the 10th of Nov. So I'll just have one shot to give it and hopefully it will be decent enough to get me through till the GD/PI Stage. Do either of you know what sort of profiles the IIMs look for in the PGP GMAT applicants?

Re: NRI Admission to IIM - 28-09-2007, 10:13 PM

Nice to see your replies guys...keep it going!!

IIM-A does require interviews / GD. I found this on their website:

"The second stage of the admission process, Group Discussion and Interview, will be held in India. Candidates called for this stage will have to make their own travel arrangements and produce evidence of having qualified for the "Overseas Candidates" category."

Date for this I could not find.

This is what i found on the IIM-C site

"Candidates will be shortlisted based on GMAT score, academic performance, relevant work experience and letters of reference. Shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for interview in India during March/April 2008. The interviews will be held in Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi. Necessary travel arrangements for this purpose must be made by the candidate. Institute will not bear any expenses for attending the interview. The GMAT score of candidates selected for 2007-2009 batch ranged between 680 -- 770 and the average was 730.
The requirements for interview may be waived at the discretion of the Institute. The final selection is made using multiple criteria that includes the parameters mentioned above."

On the IIM-B site, under the procedure of admission of overseas candidates, there was no mention of interviews / GD. I have e-mailed the query to them for confirmation and will let you guys now once I hear from them.

good job guys - lets keep this thread going and help each other.

Cheers

Re: NRI Admission to IIM - 28-09-2007, 10:19 PM

I am not sure about the profiles they prefer, but they love engineers i am quite sure of that. The last batch of IIMB (as per their website) said they had 91% engineers!!

I guess having some work-ex would also help, esp in IIMC where they have said that if you have some prior work-ex, it is preferred.

They also have differing requirements for Letters of Reco...IIMA doesnt want one, IIMB wants three, whereas IIMC wants two (preferably from faculties / teachers)

What i did read from another thread on PG is that the together that three IIMs end up taking like only 4-5 overseas candidates every year - need to check this though.

On that note heres my profile...

Experience : 3+ years
Industry: IT services
GMAT : 730
Academics: Engineering (Good)

Meet, I am not sure about the exact number of candidates that make it to IIMs via GMAT, but its true that the number is very very very small.

Can't say about A,B,C; but IIM-L's current batch of 2007-09 has 2 NRI students.

Surely they do. 244 out of 281 students in the first year are engineers. That is 86.8%.

Statistics seem to be equivocal over this fact. Just a bit more than 50% of my batch of 281 students is fresher, that is, absolutely nil work ex.

IIM-L wants 2. You may take them from your professors and any managers in your company. However, nothing like that is generally specified.

Hope this info helps.

Cool Re: NRI Admission to IIM - 29-09-2007, 03:15 AM

Hi Guys,

IIMB website says that NRI's are admitted via direct admissions. Hence I believe if someone has good workexpereince (3-4 yrs), good gmat score and reco's then they may skip him for the GD/PI and give him direct admission. (This is only my logical interpretation).

I believe same may be the case with Calcutta.

I am sure IIMA, indore and kozikhode call for GD/PI.
By the way, I am just a keen observer this year as I will give my GMAT next march and then try for 1 yr MBA,s in India.

cheers,
ranjit
