GMAT STRATEGY for 30 days schedule - 13-08-2007, 07:33 PM

A general answer for EVERYBODY : PREPARATION GMAT STRATEGY for 30 days schedule:

I presume you have the sound knowledge of: all areas that GMAT tests; how GMAT works; what is its structure etc...
I assumed this because you generally register a date at least one month before. (if you've not, you should. ...at least this is what is recommended! The early you book a date, it'll be easier for you to plan a killing strategy. ) And I assume you do get acquainted with GMAT before sending them your credit card number!

So you've thirty days. or let's say, just four weeks.
Since it is much short period than ideal period to study for the test, you might need to compromise on few study materials which are not significant to you.
If you're weak in verbal and Math is your strength you should devote more time for verbal (obviously! )

Coming to materials:
GMAT official guide 11th Edition is must:
Purchase the book immediately if you haven't already!
As they suggested, start with the diagnostic test. Know your weak areas and your strengths.
Repeat diagnostic test next day to see how awfully you score. Do meticulous analysis (let's call it MA here onwards ) about your test/answers.
OG 11 has labelled/classified each question (which is great!). Use these tags in the future too....know which question belong to which category.

My definition of MA (meticulous analysis) and whe..........

PS: Sorry I hate to do this, but this is what Google suggests instead of having duplicate articles.
Thank you.

Help plz!!! - 14-08-2007, 12:55 PM

Hi all,

I am planning to give GMAT in November end and apply for fall '08. Is it really too late?
Am already working full time, so i need this much of time for preparation. Am targetting a score of 700+.

My profile reads-

Tenth-74%
Twelfth-71%
Engg(Comp Sc.)-70%

I have been working with the biggest indian IT company for past 1.1 years now.

Well, my profile is very mediocre i guess and neither do i have a long work ex.
Am i being unrealistic fancying a chance of admission for fall '08, or should i go for it.

Plz provide some inputs

Answering your question here max125:

GMAT has 9 dummy questions in Quant and 11 dummy questions in Verbal. So a lot depends on which questions you get wrong. If your wrong ones have been the dummy ones, you will get a better score. Hence with number of wrong questions you cannot determine the score.

I will give you the same advice I give everyone. "Every question is important! Give respect to every question! No question is a dummy question for you!"

I have one additional advice for you since this is your last week. Do not give more than two tests. And do not give any other than the ones from GMATPrep and PowerPrep. Stay away from Kaplan and others this week. Their scoring algorithm is skewed and so you get lower scores. This might reduce your confidence. Relax on the previous day. Just revise concept once.

Thanks.

see, joining a coaching center at this point of time makes no sense..first solve OG 11...then solve KAPLAN PREMIER EDITION along with MANHATTAN SC's, then giv a few tests, then solve KAPLAN 800 only if u want real challenging questions cuz u ll most likely get quite a few errors in 800 and ur scores will also be on the lower side..if it demoralises u, then dont solve kaplan 800...if u still want more material, then solve 1000 sc's, rc's, cr's available on this forum or other forums...other than this, keep solving as many tests as u can...tht shud suffice i guess..

Re: GMAT Query Centre - 16-08-2007, 04:12 PM

Hi All,

I am new in the battle of GMAT.

So many discussion forums running out here that i got a bit confused

Just need to know some basics about the Test and the application procedure :-

1. My profile is :-

10th :- 84.3 %
12th :- 87.2%
B.Tech( Electronics & Instrumentation) :- 68.3 %
Work Ex :- currently 14 months in IT with Infosys.
Extra Cur :- Fair enuf in school n college.

So with my kind of profile what score shud I aim for to make it to the Big B-skuls?

2. What is the rite time to start the prep for GMAT ? I know i'm late for this year as i haven't even started my prep ... so what cud be the best for me ?

Will be obliged if i get some responces from the GMAT pandits out here .

Thanks,
Vartika

see, i m a fresher myself so i cant comment on ur profile but as regards the gmat prep, if u hv previously studied for CAT or any such entrance exam, then i guess GMAT shudnt pose much of a problem, u cud manage to finish it in 2 months concentratin majorly on verbal since quant is easier than CAT...however, if u havent studied for CAT before, then i suggest u need atleast 3-4 months of dedicated studying, with the first 2 months devoted completely to grasping the basics and the next 1 1/2 months for problem solving and the remaining days to giv mock tests...
and the foreign b-schools usually have ROUNDS for admission in a manner similar to engineering admissions...so, usually Round 2 for a lot of schools is first or second week of jan...and if u decide to apply to a particular school, then its advisable to apply in the first two rounds since majority of the seats and scholarships/assistanceships get scooped up in these two rounds itself...

Which colleges do have in mind?
If u r looking for the top notch B schools then u need to get a score of 700+. Just give some mock GMATs to build some confidence.

Re: GMAT Query Centre - 18-08-2007, 05:17 PM

Hi guys..

A problem at hand... doesnt everyone have one?

I started GMAT prep two months ago. Took the IMS diagnostic test then and got a 690.
Diagnostic test in OG11: above avg in all except PS.

Now, last week i took the first GMAT Prep test and didnot complete 10 qns on quant.
Ended up wid a 630

Today, I took an IMS practice test and completed the quant with 20 mins to spare. but my accuracy has taken a big hit! The stupid CD wont give me a final score but i got 11 qns wrong in quant. That is a huge number! Verbal is not too gr8 either with 7 qns wrong!

Need advice.. most of the qns i got wrong in Quant are DS qns and cos i dint read the qns properly...

I take my GMAT in 3 weeks.. and am targetting 700+... Helpppppppp me improve my accuracy....

Thanks!
Shruti.
