Hi Rajeev,

As you said, the one year courses are better suited to your profile. Some institutes offer specific courses for entrepreneurship, so you might wanna look at those.

High percentile scores are not as important for you given your experience. Nevertheless taking CAT/GMAT is compulsory in Indian institutes and good score will be of help.

Most things will reveal themselves as you participate in the process; so start by shortlisting the colleges and courses you find interesting and start reading.

Banning discussions on the instt will only let people make misinformed decisions IMHO.

Rahul...

Thrs no single answer for the questions you have asked..A single day in a managers life would depend on so many things...the company hes joined...the profiles hes got....the domain hes working in..

E.G -

Any new guy in HUL..P & G stays in the field most of time and travels alot in his territory and dn hes supposed to hit the region headquarters for a sales meeting...Fortnightly or may be monthly

HR guy in recruitment in IT companies - Spends weekend traveling and the week days in recruiting people

Fin guy - He could be working from the luxury of his AC office but engrossed in confusing excel sheets trying to value some company..

Equity Researcher could actually be analysis stocks and even talking to the various industry people to find out specific trends..

So all in all its different strokes for different folks

Hi Rahui

There is not a single answer for your question.

However, if I have to summarize, a post-MBA job in junior or middle management would involve strategic planning, people management, and some minior operations, in this order.

Good luck.

Kind regards,
Thomas

Re: Making a career change with MBA -- Is it viable or not??? - 21-06-2008, 05:07 PM

Hello...

I did my IT Engg diploma and have more 3 yrs of exp in a Soft Co. I have worked on Oracle, PB. Due to financial constrainst i cudnt do BE, but did External BCom from Pune Univ(will get degree in 200.
My exp. is ok, but m still not expert in Soft Technical domain, nor satisfied with my current job profile. It is sure that I dont c any challenging prospects with my current job profile. I introverted and found that I have interest in Banking functional domain.
I am in a dilemma :-
1. Should I change my field of work from engg to mgmt and go for PG(MBA) full time course.
2. So it need to quit my job and take up a risk.

Please guide me what homework I should do before taking this decision.
Thanks in advance..!

Dear Smita...

I am assuming that your external BCom is a correspondence or a part time degree. Unfortuately for you, these courses are not accepted by Bschools as eligibility criteria for MBAs is a fulltime degree for gradutation, that too with a minimum percentage.

You can go with part time courses for your MBA - these 1-2 year PGDBAs are usually held in the evening so you would not need to quit your job. If you have over 4-5 years of experience, you can also go for Exec MBAs. But note that you won't have placement support in such courses.

Also, if you change your field after your course, your work experience may or may not count. You may have to start off as a fresher in your chosen field, with much less pay. Are you ready for that?

Do think about these things. You can always get back if you have any queries. We are here to answer them.

Regards,
Grondmaster

After MBA, you can be doing just anything. The horizons are much wider than after engineering. Basically the most important thing for any job is commitment and intelligence. You prove this through your MBA from a premier B-School. With this you can take any non technical job and learn on job and do well. Most management jobs just need common sense. There will be people to do the technical stuff. You just need to analyze the situation and take decisions. Thats why MBA by itself has no value. If you do MBA from your local town university, your bachelor degree is what would be considered in giving you jobs. The MBA is not even considered. But engineering etc. have value wherever it is from because there is a minimum knowledge base an engineer is supposed to have. Not so with a MBA. It is the premier institute that adds value to you as it is a mark of your intelligence, commitment and communication skills.

Re: Making a career change with MBA -- Is it viable or not??? - 17-07-2008, 11:15 PM

Hi folks,

I found this website (PagalGuy) absolutely helpful. I really appreciate all the folks who provide their valuable inputs for confused guys like me.

Well, I am an IT Consultant with over 3 years of experience overseas (USA). I did my Masters here and got an offer from an Indian MNC. I thought of making a career change and pursue MBA. The confusing part is should i pursue MBA in india or in US? I heard the expenses would touch sky in top B schools over here..Please advise?

Tks
