NRI Admission to IIM

Hey Taktaki,

First- you got a great profile.. spice up a bit on the extra-cirriculars...some community service or something non-work related...cos u still got time and these things are pretty good differentiating factors from other similar profiles...

Now for your questions ..
1) My take on this is very simple - why do you want to risk it ? I know during my IIM C interview, there was a 15 min check on all my documents...Diff IIMs have different criteria.. for example- IIM L mandates that the GMAT must be taken outside India .. so play it safe... the best way to confirm this is to email them- and get it in writting from them.. the individual email ids is there on the websites of each IIM

2)I applied to ISB and luckily, I was dinged... The way I see it is that- ISB is a one year course where companies coming there know that they are looking at Midlevel/senior positions... at 3 yrs- yr work exp is considered on the lower side .. while the same 3 yrs at IIMs will put u at an advantage... Sure - IIMs are a two year course while ISB is a one year course .. but look at the amazing tradeoffs.. u get to interact with the senior batch, bond over two yrs to form life long associations, have great summers...in the end remember - even the ISB is being compared to the IIMs.. and not the other way round..

So it is a trade off... and i think you are still young ..so IIMs are a better bet.. it is not like you are in your thirties where there is greater pressures or family and kids to look after.. you are young ..enjoy karo... aage jake anyways kaam hi karna hain...

Once again- the above are my and only my politically incorrect , probably wrong and definately biased opinions... and so u may want to seek out some one more impartial...

Finally one last one - I think the GMAT has to be taken within one year of applying .. even though it is valid for 5 years.. IIMs want you to take in the last year...i am pretty sure of you getting a PI call from IIM C , L, I, K and a decent chance at B depending on your acads and janam kundli....dunno abt IIM A...so wont speculate on that...

Btw.. this thread has become pretty dead for awhile...

people .. start pouring out with what are future plans.. people plannning to come to India earlier for the various IIM meets where all the new junta who have gotten in their IIMs meet in mumbai, delhi, chennai etc. and interact with their future batchmates as well as seniors on summers and super seniors passing out .. lot of gyan is given out...

This thread really has cooled down. I guess everyone is deliberating and making decisions. It would be nice if everyone shared the thoughts that were running through their heads, which schools they decided on if any, and when people were heading back to India.

This is probably the easiest topic to be writing an essay on. I know thats easier said, but why don't you try writing a few rough drafts, get them critiqued and then rewrite them.

Here are some suggestions.

1. Think about the most important events that have shaped your life, doesn't matter how early, but significant events that have defined you. Struggles or sacrifices your parents made for you, hardships you went through, obstacles you faced, successes you accomplished.... anything. I mean, it doesn't have to be a bollywood script, just an honest narrative.
2. Important influences... your parents, teachers perhaps, mentors you have met etc.
3. Your aspirations for the future.. a rough roadmap of the next few years
4. What defines you? What makes your unique?

No one cares about how literary your essay is (this is not a language class) but only how passionate you are and how sincere you are. Don't try to put general stuff, cliched stuff in there. Don't write things you think they want to hear or read. Just be honest and passionate and let your heart do the writing.

Write a rough draft and have a LOT of people look at it. Incorporate their suggestions and rewrite it..

500 words is not a lot, so work at it !

Edit. : Don't be scared to be different.

Hi.. Adding my two cents..
While Sandipan has covered pretty much everything..
The one thing that i feel is important is - if you from the IT/Software industry.. then you usually are competing with lots of students who are in a similar position.. so u need to have differentiating factors.. maybe community service, maybe you were the captain of the school team , or team lead for the company's SCR.. The point is you must show u are different ...

Lastly.. there are lot of threads on PG..where u will find a lot more info and gyaan than this thread.. So, maybe u are better off on those threads.. also a simple Google search will give u lots of info - and with a few changes -it will work at Ithe IIMs..

They said the cut-off was 60% for AWA.

Damn! Sorry to hear that. 760 is a great score Devrathi. I'm not sure if you applied anywhere else this year, or what your plans are, but next year, apart from other schools (US or elsewhere ) I am sure you'll get an interview invite from A. I'm confident about that, because I have a 760 and decent academics and I did.

That's a real shocker to me. I think since IIMs are governed my Central Govt, they are forced to keep these cutoffs to show some transparency in the admission process. This is why they tend to over rely on test scores. Another reason could be that the admission committees are too busy/lazy to closely evaluate each and every NRI application. But I'd give them a benefit of doubt.

Whatever the reason might be, but paying $200 for application fees and getting this reason for rejection really sux. I don't understand why they charge so much if they are just going to filter applications based on test scores. This is especially true for IIM-A. I feel like they robbed my money. They took $100, looked at my 720 gmat score and sent me a rejection. How can they justify $100 application fees?
