I think this will help you decide as well, the ROI of a 1yr MBA is better when looked in a proper time frame perspective.

example:

FOR 1 YR MBA

2008 - 2009: joinMBA Invest INR 12,00,000 (-)
2009 - 2010: Start Earning INR 10,00,000 (+) (considering less than AVG salary)
2010 - 2011: Still Earning INR 10,50,000 (+)

Net ROI in 2008 - 2011 is INR 8,50,000 (+)
add an additional year of work ex to your resume.

FOR 2 YR MBA

2008 - 2009: joinMBA Invest INR 3,00,000 (-)
2009 - 2010: STill Studying INR 3,00,000 (-)
2010 - 2011: Start Earning INR 10,50,000 (+) (Optimistic figure)

Net ROI in 2008 - 2011 is INR 4,50,000 (+)
you lose a year of managerial work ex in this case

*considering no interest component , cause the equation gets better for 1yr MBA then too.

So would revise your list and say:
things in favour of this course are -
1. 1 yr pgm
2. good placements
3. good faculty and campus
4. ROI - i add this in favor of 1 year MBA

Regards,
Rohit

Hi Puys & SPJ aspirants ,

i found this on a blog posted by one of the SPJCM students, thought it was worth sharing: So here it is:
__________________________________________________ ________________________

SPJCM - Mission Accomplished: From Engineer to MBA!

This blog is perhaps long awaited. Something about the twin city model of SPJCM is kind of a mandate in this space! It is rather a dream to come to S.P.Jain and so was mine and finally, it did happen (all by the grace of God and my well-wishers) and the entire journey of MBA went on very smoothly. Though few credit courses are still left, it would be over in no time; hence I am totally qualified and justified in putting my thoughts across.

S.P.Jain, Singapore:S. P. Jain gave us the opportunity to see and understand the great city, Singapore (which is one of the twin cities of the model) - a city which can be stated as a perfect example of a city rising from rags to riches. Whosoever has visited the National Museum of Singapore would surely be able to appreciate the fact more than others. What more, we were also fortunate to be a part of their mega independent day celebration (9th August). There was a lot of learning from a great city like that, which inspires one to be like what one wants to be! When you look around the city – the HBD, MRTs, SMRTs, tall buildings, glaring lightings, shopping malls, etc., you would know what exactly a government should be doing to make their people happy. The landscape, infrastructure of world class standards, education (NUS, SMU, and INSEAD) and laws of the land is absolutely amazing! There is no denying fact that India is great (looking at the mere size, diversity and the recent accelerating GDP growth) but so is Singapore! Of course, it’s always easier said than done and there is no way that we could compare Singapore directly with India, but we should take the best practices from a great country and try to implement it slowly and gradually. At the end of the day, I look at it the way a consumer (be it their own countrymen or foreigners) is made happy by providing them the ease and the value for the price that he/she pays. In fact, it’s often said that the Singapore government is more like an Entrepreneur than the kind of government we have known in India. With as little a data as I mentioned above, I hope to have given the bird’s eye view of Singapore.

S.P. Jain, Dubai: Dubai is the 2nd city of the twin city model of S.P.Jain Global MBA program. Dubai is strikingly different from Singapore. Just as Singapore is like “rising from rags to riches”, Dubai is known for building castles in air. Indeed, it is!! Having looked at Dubai, I always wondered how a desert could look so beautiful and modern. If a deserted place like this can be so amazing, this only adds to the conviction that “Nothing is Impossible”. This is how this city is truly inspiring and drives an individual to achieve the incredible. Though the whole city is under construction phase now, the infrastructure that it already has is mind boggling. Dubai is trying to give a true picture of being truly cosmopolitan and everything is just in place to beat the best in the world. The government is constantly encouraging the other economies of the world to come to Dubai for further enhancing their growth. The public transport is bit of a problem here, but the measures have been taken by the government in this regard and the city is undergoing a metamorphic change. The Singapore market is already mature, but Dubai is still growing and has a lot more to offer. Keep a close watch on the city for 5-10 years from now and I am sure Dubai would show what it has in store for the people of the world.
This lifetime amazing exposure is what S.P.Jain has provided to their students and each one of us is proud to have it. This is what we will be carrying with us to provide to the organisations (wherever we have joined) besides the normal bookish knowledge and the rigour what it takes to be a true MBA!

I can see a lot of discussion about how the placement scene is turning out to be this time around. This is an attemot to complete my previously incomplete post which i had started typing a month back for the JAN 08 batch , but as this is qually applicable to all the forth coming batches id like to complete it anyways.

Well to put things into perspective, i would give you a clear overall (and not just placements) snapshot of the current SPJCM status:

What to expect::

> For people looking forward to learning: You will not be disheartened. SPJCM faculty hails from some of the best bschools in the world including likes of Harvard Business School, London Business School, National Univ of Singapore , Nanyang Tech Singapore , ISB Hydrabad, IIM- A/B/C , SP Jain Mumbai , XIM Bhubneshwar and most from the industry. These profs do not come easy and this kind of mix is rear in any Bschool in the world. These Profs will ignite your thinking process if you want them to.

>For people looking for Experience : The experience can come from the following areas (by no means is this list an exhaustive one)...

----->Peers : SP Jain makes sure that it picks the best minds from amongst the applicants and also takes care of having the right demographical and cultural mix. The average batch work ex for my batch currently stands at about 3.5 Years with 2 freshers in a batch of 147 students. There are a few students who have close to 8 years of work ex and that just goes to show the diversity of the batch.

----->Classroom: Needless to say the "Great Indian Pathshala style learning" works well till date , expect ruthless class hours and even more unforgiving assignments and quizes (i have not slept for more than 4 Hrs a day in the last 2 weeks).

----->Teachers / Guest Lecturers: Wont reiterate the "Guru Gaan", but would definitely say expect the best and you will still be surprised by what SPJ is offering in terms of faculty.

----->Singapore/ Dubai: Lets call it "Tacit Knowledge" ! You will gain invaluable experience while you interact with some of the industry experts [during your Internship (SGP)] in these to cities.

-----> Exposure: This is not exactly a source but never the less , the exposure to Group dynamics and public speaking , research and anaylsis may drive you off the edge. You will be exposed in the true sense (thanks to the ruthless acad co-ordiators).

>Expect Geat Infrastructure : Dubai and Singapore college campus and Hostel have great infrastucture (at least surpassed my expectations). Even after working in Infosys Bangalore campus for over a year i still found the Singapore campus stunning. Classes are recorded and the 24 Hr wifi campus lets you stay connected to the world 24/7.

>Sleepless Nights , Sleepless Nights and more Sleepless Nights: Lets just put it this way "You will be kept busy!" Part of peer learning at SPJCM is to get students to do a lot of group work and that too in different groups. Alomst every course involves research , Presentation , assignments , discussions etc. in groups.

>Placements : At SPJCM placements is normally a month long event and this because of several reasons. So, expect placements to be a slightly longer process than you would hear about in the usual Indian Bschools , However, SPJCM placemnt process when compared to that of NUS , NTU , INSEAD is quite short and fast as these Bschools normally do not have a formal placement service and students take a good 2 -4 months to get placed.

Expect Great compnaies to visit the campus and also expect good or above industry standard salaries. Most companies visiting SPJCM considers it at par with SPJIMR, FMS & MDI and therefore the salaries are structured in the same manner, at times even higher.

Guys with relevant work experience and good academic background normally get placed the earliest.

> EXPECT A GREAT ROI : If you are good , epect this place to do wonders for your career. If you have focued on learning and made the most of what SP Jain is offering YOU WILL GET A GREAT JOB , absolutely no doubt about it!!!

>Profiles offered are also excellent : Consultant , Sr. Consultant , Asst. Vice President , Associate Consultant , Project Manager, Research Analyst, Fund Manager , Sr. Business Analyst , Business Development Officer, Regional Head are some of the common titles at SPJCM placements.

What NOT to expect::

>Do NOT expect a 1 Year Vacation/Holiday : People thinking of enrolling in for a 1 Year holiday will be in for a rude shock . The Administration is very strict and the curriculum will not let you settle with this kind of attitude , so please look elsewhere if you want to go for a holiday to UAE & Singapore. (SPJCM has had some people expelled who have fallen much below the minimum level of academic rigor or have resorted to unethical practices).

>Do NOT treat SPJCM as a JOB / PLACEMENT Company : For people who thought SPJCM is a ticket to a quick MBA after which you will get an out of the world job and then you can live happily ever after , coming to SPJCM could prove to be devastating.

People with this attitude end up focuing on just placements and not the learning which is what the corporates look for during the Placement week. Such students loose out on the key aspect of the GMBA and therefore struggle to convert any job interview. SPJCM will be a great catalyst to get a GREAT JOB if and only if you are capable and you have put an honest effort during the curriculum.

BottomLine: Expect great jobs only if you are deserving candidate , SPJCM does not want Miracles to happen for undeserving candidates.

>DO NOT EXPECT TOO MANY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: The number of international studensts in our batch was fairly low and we do not see the trend changing over night. Please expect most students to be from INDIA or at best NRI from US , UAE etc.

>DO NOT EXPECT A MILLION $ SALARY as soon as you graduate: Almost all students get very good salaries and compensation packages , but do not expect Rs. 1 Crore offers being made. Salaries are based upon every individuals competencies and worth to the recruiting company.

SPJCM does put a lower limit of salary any company can offer , this stands at Rs. 7 Lacs and this is mostly for freshers. The Indian packages are always above Rs. 9 Lacs for anyone with 2 + years of relevant work experience.

The average & Median INDIAN Salaries have been in much above Rs. 10 Lacs for the last 2 yrs. and is expected to go up further.

BOTTOMLINE: Do not worry about your placements at all, SPJ will get everyone placed with great pay and profiles at the end of the day. Focus on the learning and the exposure.

Hope this has given you a picture of things to expect and not to expect. All this was based on my perosnal experience at SPJCM for the last 10 Months.

Regards,

SPJmite

A rosy picture I will say..

I got through SPJCM last year and deferred it, as industry people said its not a good choice at all...(read IIML prof, People in high ranks in banks, IT, fmcg including spjimrites)

PLease do your individual research and then decide.
I know many people who are spjcmites and spjimrites...
I very well know how the placement figures are manipulated..
Last year I talked to many guys who were passouts and were workin in TCS, infy, CTS wid avg sals of 7-8.

I am not tryin to pull anyone down...
BUT, if you have no other option... go for SPJCM

I would say if you have written gmat much better choices in asia are NUS,AIM(Manila), Nanyang in order of quality.

if it is to be...it is up to me!!

Just bumped into this thread..
As an MBA student i would always suggest the 2 year course rather than the 1 yr course, which in my opinion is suitable for individuals with 7+ yrs of experience and who specifically know which line or career they want to pursue...
Having an extremely rigorous schedule in the first year and being taught all the subjects of different concentrations under an MBA umbrella, it still isn’t easy to figure out the right career track. The electives catering to a specific line of study in the 2nd year help eliminating ( to a decent extent) the ambiguity in choosing the right job and profession( this is something you wanna do for the rest of your life)
Personally I feel , cramming everything into one year would not do justice to this vast and fascinating MBA study
