Well... It would have been better if you had given a short brief about your education background. Anyway...

1. For any management discipline, you got to show an interest towards the field. But at the same time, you are not expected to know everything. Interviewers are bound to grill you on finance topics, but they also know that your knowledge would be limited. So if you are not able to answer a question, don't consider it as an embarassment. Better use it as a stepping stone.

Now, if you have written certifications like CFA or FRM then your interests in finance can be put forward easilty to the interviewer. Other than that, just try to brush up some very basic concepts related to finance from your undergraduate discipline. Little bit of accounting would also help. NPV, IRR etc.. just the outline. You need not know anything in depth.

2. "My presentation starts in a very vague way"... well how vague ??..... It would be better if you can give an example of how your approach doesnt work.

3. A formal western attire is probably the best. Avoid too much of Indian jewellery. Small earrings etc are fine but not the dangling ones. Keep it subtle and simple.

Sir,
I m a commerce graduate and in the first year of mcom......
Vague in the sense that when I start it, i write down something and then I start wondering that It could have been approached in a better way. I don't get any catchy beginning immediately and write ambiguous things.

Hi All,
I have done B.Tech & passed in 2010 and then joined Vedanta Resources. After working for 16months i gave resignation to start full time preparation for cat12. But, this year i will be totally out of work so i will have one year gap. Will it have any impact to take admission in top B-schools? Please tell me what best can be done for making strong profile to get admissions in IIMs & most prominent colleges.

Hey,
I am an electrical and electronics engg fresher. Passed out in feb 2010 , till now i've as good as NO experience , as the jobs on offer were mainly field jobs , so i thought its better to go for preparation of CAT and fetch a nice B school , and thereafter a good enough job.
What do you think of my profile ?
And more importantly , HOW CAN I COVER UP this 2 yr gap of mine ???

PLZ HELP and do suggest !!!

Hi Maichel

Bygones are bygones so no point worrying about it. However you are right that something needs to be said to justify the GAP ( although it is not that huge a gap).

A friend of mine preparing for civil services spent 5 years after engineering and he made it to the interview round but could not make it jusitified it for his MBA interview so you definitely can.

If there is a family business you can talk about that but then you better have worked and have a sound knowledge of the same. If even that is not there then I would recommend you take up some job and by the time you are due for interviews atleast the interviewers would see that you have the capability and energy to do that ( and what if god forbid you dont get through a B school this year also, you wouldnt appreciate a 3 year gap right?)

Field jobs are great platform to learn sales and you will be better off than freshers or people with IT work ex when it comes to seslection for B schools. Companies in the b school will also appreciate some experience in the field of sales.

Hi Seniors,

I stumbled upon this thread today morning and what an awesome thread this is! I have my IIM-K GD/PI on 23rd Feb. I want to do a specialization in Marketing, so what sort of terms should I be familiar to? What sort of questions can I expect? I am from IT background and have corporate exposure of 16 months in IBM. Also, I never thought of doing MBA in my engineering days, but after joining IBM, I have been through some really unpleasant incidents in my office which forced me to think whether all managers thought in the same way like managers in my project, and gave me the urge to go forward and try becoming one of them, but with better morales and with better rapport with the employees. Might sound very filmy, but thats how it is! So when I face the question-Why MBA?, m not very sure of how to answer!

Any help would be welcomed!!

Hi NITD10

Specialisation in marketing is what you want to do and the panelists know that you have not yet done it. So if at all there are questions ( and that too if you come across as someone very passionate about marketing) they could be around 4 ps, SWOT analysis, favourite brands and why etc etc.

Why MBA? I agree that the job content of IT companies ( esp. TCS, Wipro infy and the ilk) is not very high so there is disillusionment. But that is not what I would out across in a PI. And definitely not the feelings you have for your bosses or managers in general. It could jeoparidse your interview if the panelists go into the depth of these.

So say something positive for example your being a person with multi tasking abilities and capability to handle a much wider scope of work. That is definitely something which MBA will give you.

Basically think about something positive.
