hi all...
coming back to pagalguy after a long time..

i have a small interest in improving my vocab always...and keep searching the net for stuff that can be useful and innovative..

have tried locating the perfect thread which highlights visual vocab but could not find one..so thought would start one of my own..

found a couple of really interesting vocab sites, so thought i should share with everyone:

Wordpandit

love the visual vocab concept they are using..new site..limited words but the site is live..so daily one gets to know a couple of words, which is cool..have a look..:cheerio:

A dictionary ref: Wordnik: All the Words
like its home page..pretty jazzy...for a dictionary...love the way they have designed the homepage..though still a little doubtful as to its purpose...

overall will be sharing some more links and vocab material that i have..
hope to find some nice inputs..

It indeed is. I remember one of my friends even mentioning it.
liked the lively feel it has!

plus who designs the posters:D nice work!:cheerio:

yup it is cool..

love the Phocabulary Booth section: Phocabulary Booth

the poster concept is cool..my fav on wordpandit..:cheerio:

another interesting one is: The Word Diaries | GRE /TOEFL Coaching Institute in Chandigarh , Mohali
it is a blog for GRE coaching but like its approach..

Wordpandit in my favorites too............ 😃

attached a sample of Wordpandit work in this post.

have a look at what is done here..

Smartppc, thanks for referring me to the sites....they are great resources! One post that I really loved in the latter blog was this teaching of the word bluster through Andaz Apna Apna (one of my all time favs! :P) and well, this too.....featuring the acrophobic Mr. Beans. 😁

aahh..that is a nice post pandemonium..
like this one too on wordpandit: Scofflaw

Jayways vocab method and wordpandit's Youtube section are both based on the same approach..youtube's educational wonders:cheerio:

this is an article which outlines the diff. approaches that can be undertaken to learn words: The quest for words | Wordpandit

have a look and see hows is it..

any ideas other than these to learn words?

Hi Puys,
I am practicing some mnemonics(a sort of) to improve the vocab... they don't comply with grammar so
for eg:

Clamor : we all are in a killa(Castle) ..then suddenly somebody shoots a girl n she dies...the chaos spreads & everybody starts running n shouting
Kille(Castle) me koi mar gya (dead)... kille me koi mar gya...
cla (kille) + mor (mar) = clamor
Meaning : To shout loudly; especially in a confused way.

Chagrin : u r preparing tea for the guests n the chai(Tea) fell on your white dress, which left you disappointed in front of guests
chai + giri on white dress = chai +giri = chagrin
Meaning : a feeling of being disappointed or annoyed because of your own mistake; mortification

pontificate : Ricky ponting always pontificates (he is rude n arrogant in field , sorry ponting fans )
Meaning : if someone pontificates about something, they express their opinions in arrogance.(disapproving)

Parvenu (came in cat 2008 ) : (a sort of small story) there were two friends Parveen n veenu...they belong to low social class n lives in a hut.. vo mahino tak na to nahate (take bath) the na hi kapde dhote the (wash their clothes)...one day they find a box full of gold ...they became rich but their still their cleaning habits remains same so parveen + veenu = Parvenu
Meaning : a person from low social or economic position who has suddenly become rich & powerful (disapproving).

Pandemonium : lets assume if a pandit (priest) is having a harmonium(musical instrument) then what he will do
Pandit + Harmonium = he will create noise n sing besura raag...means he will create lots of noise & confusion
Meaning : A situation in which there is lot of noise & confusion; Brouhaha; rumpus; ruckus.

I am practicing these & maintaining a list...if this is helpful for you also then i can share these mnemonics.

that is a nice post TheChaser. will add a few mnemonics to ur list..:)

Lets bell the cat this year...ATB to all

amezing way .
i'll try to add words here.

Posting some mnemonics guys..hope they are helpful:

abash: To destroy the self-confidence, poise, or self-possession of; disconcert; make ashamed or embarrassed.
mnemonic:
An easy way to remember this word is through its mnemonic. Every now and then, at least in our childhood, we have been Bashed. What exactly happens when we are bashed? We lose face, feel humiliated and we are embarrassed. In others words we are a-bashed. There you go. Now this one should stick. Just remember that one instance when the above happened.

Apolitical:Not political; of no political significance
mnemonic:A simple mnemonic to remember the word is: a means without, therefore apolitical means without politics.

Arable: capable of producing crops
mnemonic:The first association that can be made with arable is with the word ARAB. Arab countries are ones that are predominantly desert nations, and hence no land there is arable. It is hard to grow crops on sand, as well know. And hence, these lands stand as opposites of arable lands.

Will be adding more tips in the coming days.
In btw wordpandit added a new section: Contextual Vocabulary | Wordpandit

nice section..
happi learning...:D

very nice!!! hope i had it when i appeared for cat!!!
