VA/RC your bugbear? Ask any VA related query here...
I will do my best to answer them
I am jobless as it is :)

Edit 1: No questions like what is the superlative adjunct to the simple future that maybe used with an intransitive verb?... They don't ask that for CAT ;)

PS: I MADE that up... so don't ask me what that means!

Ok here goes....

whosoever, whomsoever, whomever, whoever...U get the drift don't ya?

Where/What do we use these famous "W"s??

ok temme why a post subjunctive mood is not future tense

Ok here goes....

whosoever, whomsoever, whomever, whoever...U get the drift don't ya?

Where/What do we use these famous "W"s??

who
interrogative pronoun,
what or which person or persons -- used as an interrogative who was elected?> who they are> -- used by speakers on all educational levels and by many reputable writers, though disapproved by some grammarians, as the object of a verb or a following preposition who did I see but a Spanish lady -- Padraic Colum> who the message is from -- G. K. Chesterton>

Whom
Objective form of Who... pronoun
-- used as an interrogative or relative; used as object of a verb or a preceding preposition whom the bell tolls -- John Donne> or less frequently as the object of a following preposition whom you wrote to> though now often considered stilted especially as an interrogative and especially in oral use
usage Observers of the language have been predicting the demise of whom from about 1870 down to the present day. Yet it shows every indication of persisting quite a while yet.
as in
Whomshall I say is calling?

WHATEVER!!

Well, whoever is used in the same context.. as in it doesn't matter who...

"Whom (who) shall I call for the party?"
"Whomever (Whoever)!"

Whomever is the objective form of whoever.

The government gave the contract to whoever paid the highest money.
Whomever cannot be use here, because the sentence is the answer to the question
Who did the government award the contract to? (according to the first rule of using who..)

Whomsoever and Whosoever serve same functions with different levels of emphasis.

as in

"To whomsoever it may concern
ConvolutedSignal has asked me a totally unnecessary grammar question!"

Again, it answers the question..
To whom is this letter addressed?... ie the subject!

Whosoever wants to avail this facility is welcome to do so....

I hope you get the drift!

I hope you roll in hell, Vivek ;)

Hi shrutz

i am preparing for CAT-06 and believe there are hundreds like me who do not find english to be their cup of tea. I mean can u help us out with
1)va section- in CAT, u have ques. on critical reasoning analogies and correct usage. how do u actually go 4 such kinda questions.
2)rc section-do u see the length of the passage or the no of questions it has b4 attempting any?
3)general-what shuld b ur vocab size? i know its an oft repeated ques, but plz plz plz

Adios

Ideally, you ought to allocate as little time as possible to VA/RC
... 20 minutes to VA if not too many PJs and precis are there! and 20 to RC... with ac accuracy of about 80, you ought to attempt at least 35-40 questions... this will enable you to clear cutoffs and get a cushion..
Again, try to do as many passages as you can. By now, you ought to have mastered doing the questions and reading simultaenously.. as in
read the questions, go to passage, rinse & repeat!
Keep flexible time limits... try not to overshoot by much and DEFINITELY do shorter RCs which have more questions, but remember some long RCs are easy to score in because they're not too abstract!

Vocab size does not matter in CAT. Application does. If you can understand the meaning of a word from the context, you're set for life :)

Critical reasoning depends wholly on your LA... brush up on your logic. But beware, you either have it or you don't! 😁

gr8 initiative from shrutz.
Hope anandv starts a similar thread for Quant . dhruv and tp for di.
are they listening?

Sentence correction as in find the wrong sentences among four sucks... I get atleast one out of three wrong... Atleast the TIME ones have sucked so far... Though i think the CAT ones may not be so dubious...

Para jumbles take too much time and its very tough to get a higher accuracy during the test... Atleast for me they are the last priority...

I absolutely love CR, summary etc... fill in the blanks is also cool... So in the test i will stick to these and try to skip the pjs if there is no time..

I have a feeling verbal accuracy and score is directly proportional to the amount of reading you are used to... And i read books very rarely these days and hopefully will try to read atleast 5 new books upto the CAT...

Concentration and speed of reading is absolutely crucial... How much can this be improved in the last few weeks... I am really now just used to read of a computer or a laptop... Very little book reading... Minor loss if you are out of school for a while... Atleast cracking RCs is easy if the concentration can be maintained for 20-25 minutes... But that is the toughest part for me... But reading the questions first or together with the passage seems to work better for me...

Atleast till date i attempt around 35 marks and get a little more than 20... I think with some effort a 25+ or a close to 30 score is very gettable in the real CAT... I really dont expect too much more than that...

So shrutz if you have time why dont you analyse each particular question type like sentence correction and other previous CAT paper question patterns... Maybe some insights can help me and others on improving the general accuracy in solving those EU questions...

I have now with me hopefully to be read next week... Shantaram, freakonomics, blink, marriage crap+ shobha de... I really want to read some interesting books for Nov... What do you suggest?

K

Shantaram!!!!!! 😁 I'm almost through with that one, its amazing!

And Shoba De?

PS- Sorry for barging in like this

how much is the ideal score for rc in 20 min. how many pssg should be done considering difficulty level of cat and wat should be the strategy and wat can be done bout it in the days left plz post reply soon .

well i agree with shrutz..( as if there is any chance of disagreing with the crowned verbal queeen):) ..

in any case my strategy has been much the same only that i do notcomplete VA/rc in one go... i start with RC and keep 25 min during which i try to go through all the passages..Also i give priority scheduling to the passages in oorder in which i will attempt them. it helps. then i switch to maths and come back to VA after that and if the lenght of questions are decent then 15 min is more than enuf..

but the diff between guys like me who attempt around 45 quest and people like shruti and shrikanth et al is the accuracy.. so try to achieve a good accuracy

liking and disliking a passage depends on person's choice but many a times i have bungled in poems so i am lil wary of those..( one's like ulyses that came in time)

the other point of worry is picking sentectes with grammatical errors . now i can frame a lot of those but picking them is tuff..

in precis type quest i find that choices which contain most info is mostly the right answer but again this is not a rule.

bye for now..

thanks shruti, for taking it on. i am facing some prob. in VA, since last 4 AIMCATS my VA performance has dropped drastically, i was getting +25 with my best at 31 in one of these AIMCATS, but now it has come down to near 20, in 0616 i got a measly 16.33 (i wrote the paper a day in advance) !! that too after 40 attempts. it pains me more as i give 45-46 minutes to VA. Any suggestions.

PS. I m having my daily dose of ToI and Hindu.

My VA performance has fallen off hooribly. from 30 (at times 35)+, its fallen to 20+. Dont know what to do. Attempts are falling off. Made mistakes in the fill in the blanks with 4 choices each having 2 blanks. I just cant seem to get it correct in the last 4 aimcats. Also I have noticed that while I used to attend 4-5 passages of RC at 80 to 90% accuracy(twice 100% accuracy for 4 passages) in 20 minutes, today I attended just 2(u heard me right) in 15 minutes. Had no time to attend the summaries. With my quantz and DI improving by the day, Iam starting to get worried about VA/RC (something that has hardly been a concern for me before). Any ideas to rejuvenate my Reading spped or thoughts to improve and pick my self up again?

Well DG, after this exam, I am not sure about my VA and RC anymore 😉 Anyways, as the days pass by I'll bring up some part of the CAT questions and go through on how I do it... might not work for you though!

Sumit.. there is no ideal score in RC.. Like any other section, it depends wholly on the difficulty of the paper!
But try to zip though VA and do most of the RC in the allotted time!
Again, depending on whether you read the passage or just skim through the questions, time will also vary. Do some sectional tests to find out your comfort level and go for it!

Well said Pr!

Gia... all our marks have been coming down 😁 weirdly enough! Don't worry, keep at it and it'll all be fine!! If you would have done the CRTs, you'll know what to expect from CAT papers!!!

Same goes for you Sri... AIMCAT 616 I have an enviable accuracy of 64%!!! How sad is that? 😉

Edit: No questions like what is the superlative adjunct to the simple future that maybe used with an intransitive verb?... They don't ask that for CAT ;)

Madamjee can u tell me whether transitivity of verbally challenged emotions holds true in the relational knowledgebase of a parrallely distributed hypermart module or not? I have some more queries, where should I mail you my 50TB questionbank? :D
