Hi,

Thanks for the valuable information about PGSEM. To get admissions for this course, one should depend on CAT or PGSEM entrance exam?

What is the actual difference in both exams, in terms or priority, difficulty and timings?

Also can you tell me what is difference between GMITE and PGSEM.

I would you appreciate your help.

HI
I am working in Engineering Services co. in CAD/CAE area.
Whether I am eligible to apply to this course ?
Also there is PGDCM offered by IIM-C. Whether I am eligible to this also?

You are eligible for PGSEM if you have completed 2ys of work exp on June , 2008 for the next season ( For the exact cut-off date, refer to IIMB site when they come out with PGSEM notification this year..)

PGDCM @ IIMC is a full-time course, where as PGSEM , which we are discussing here is a part time executive MBA course.. I guess any CAT - candidate should be eligible to apply for PGDCM.. Please check in some IIM Calcutta related threads for information about that.

Thanks,
Ajith

Hello Ajith,
Please let me know
1) how would i go about preparing for PGSEM exam?
2) how much this part time tag going to affect , when compared to full time MBA ?

Over first question, I didnt take the PGSEM entrance test..I gave CAT. However, I've heard that PGSEM entrance test is also similar to CAT in pattern.Hence, I guess a similar preparation to CAT would do..
I'd advice, give CAT..if scores are not good, give PGSEM entrance test.

Second Q, well, obviously, you would find it tough to get the same weightage as a PGP from IIM does.. Especially if it comes to sectors outside software.. However, think on these lines.. assume you have 3 yrs exp now.. By the time you complete the PGSEM, you would have 5 1/2 yrs exp in s/w .. Added to that, u'll have a PGSEM degree to boot .. And if you are trying for a more business oriented job in software sector itself , Dont u think such a profile would hold good ? .. I'd never advice taking this over PGP in IIMs But surely do consider this as an option if u couldnt manage to get into PGP..

At the end of the day, everything depends on how you market yourself.. If you are good in your subjects, and can market yourself well,
Part-timer tag won't be a big problem atleast in Software related fields .
And remember, if some manager in a company is just unwilling to listen to you just because you did a part time MBA , then it is rather his loss..Not yours.

Hi,
Thanks for the info you have given...it was indeed an ocean of information for me.

My problem is that I am appearing for the first time in CAT and I just started my preparations in July '07(before that I was in US). I have an experience of 8 years in HCL and chances are very slim of clearing CAT.

Given a chance, should I still opt for GMITE as I feel that I might not be able to get admission to PGP/PGSEM ? Also, if possible, can you tell me the placement scenario about GMITE ?

If you can let me know some contact info about somebody already in GMITE, then it would be great.

Thanks
Best Regards
Neeraj

GMITE is a certificate program I believe..PGSEM , like PGP is a Diploma in management ( equivalent to an MBA ) , but a part time course.I dont think any placement opportunities exist for GMITE as well. Remember, institutes won't be able to offer you placement services if the course is part time that u do along with your work..You'll have to find your own path.

Ajith

A new PGSEM web-site has been opened and you can register for openhouses at IIMB over this program through the site ..

Site URL : Welcome to PGSEM website .. Also , the detailed syllabus and electives offered till now has been uploaded ( more or less same as PGP )

Hi Ajith, the information was very useful. I have applied for PGSEM course for 2008 batch and i expect the exam to commence on March'02. Prior to the test, i haven't taken any CAT or GMAT tests. So can you kindly tell me, how to prepare for the exam where i have only three months. Also can you tell me where i can find previous sample questions.

Prepare using CAT papers..PGSEM paper is quite similar..I dont think any old question papers are available AFAIK, they used to take back question papers..( Not sure as I applied through CAT score )

I am not very confident about my score in CAT 2007. Can you please tell what minimum score can we consider appropriate for PGSEM. I have 2+ yr of exp in IT.

Hi Ajith,

Thanks a lot for doing such a nice job. I was searching for some pool of information about PGSEM on PG few months, but didn't found any. I would really appreciate if you can provide me suggestions/ideas on my query.

I have appeared for CAT in 2008, but scores are not good. I have applied for PGSEM course & will be taking the exam in March. I am working in good MNC in PUNE, by June 2008 will have 3 years of workex. I have decent profile, with a well mix of extra-curricular & academics. My problem is regarding the clarification on 'No objection certificate' required at the time of interview. Since my company has no other branch/office in India (another one is expected very soon in Gurgaon, but no chance in South India); I don't think producing that letter from my company will make any sense. In order to join the course I have to switch my job, but I really doubt how can any new company (which I have not even joined by then), will ready to give me the 'no objection letter'.
Is it possible to have some alternative in this scenario? I guess, no company will disagree with my absence for sometime on Friday (which I will be compensating anyhow), but its a little unconvincing asking for such condition right at the time of joining; considering the fact I will be joining them only if I gets admitted to PGSEM course.
I am not worried about the PGSEM test, but really concerned about the process afterwards ... since I have to fight two battles then, my interview for PGSEM & a decent job switch.
I have posted this query to you, to know if you yourself or some of your colleagues/seniors have faced such situation; & may be their experience will help me in this.

Boss

Hi,

I have 97.5 OA %tile in CAT, with 96 in QA, 97.5 in DI and 85.2 in VA.
I will have 2 yrs work exp. as of Jul' 08 in a reputed Software Company.

Now, my queries are :

1. Am i eligible for this course?
2. If so, with my score , do i stand a chance for a GD/PI call?

Thanx!
Cheers !

@dextor -- short listing is profile based with some weightage to exam scores..somewhat like PGP shortlisting itself..I can say, if u have above 94 perc overall , definitely apply .. Otherwise, try for PGSEM admission test

@boss of all -- Hmm..tricky question..I dont know if anyone has been in this dilemma.. But all I can say is that at the time of interview, u need that No-objection letter..without that they wont consider you. So, settle that job switch by then.

@megadeath -- scores look decent for an interview call..But regarding eligibility, there is a cutoff day before which you need to complete 2 yr exp..Typically thats in June ..And pgsem office does not allow any relaxation on that front..Call up admissions office and check the exact cutoff day for workexp.

Thanks Ajith for your quick reply. I am too planning that way, but afraid because I have make up my mind to go to Bangalore just for this course. If I couldnt convert it later, I would be in a real mess L. Anyways that seems to be a must take chance for me now.
However, I you can get chance to have a word with your colleagues on this, please let me know. I think I am not the only person who is in this dilemma; others might have also faced this issue before.

Hi Ajith
Good to see the amount of information you have provided about PGSEM. I am thinking about joining this course.
I am 4 yr exp in software industry. I would like to know the career growth for 4 yr exp after PGSEM as there is not much brand naming for PGSEM course. I saw in your post that one can get into manegerial/analyst and consultant kind of roles after PGSEM. What do you mean by manegerial here? Is it typical project management? What value does PGSEM adds to the manegerial role?

Do you have any information about consultancy? How will this course help us get into IT consultancy as its said that the course content is more or less similar to 2 yr PGP course.

Also after Qualifying in the PGSEM test, what all needs to be submitted before the interview? Please throw some light on this...

Thanks in Advance !!

Hello Ajith,

Thanks for the useful info. about PGSEM.

I am applying for PGSEM this year.
But I am confused whether to apply with my GMAT score or opt for PGSEM entrance test.

I have a GMAT score of 640 (33 verb/ 45 Quant/ AWA 4.5).
Can I expect a call for interview with this score?

I have around 6 years experience in embedded automotive systems(software).

Please advise,

Thanks and regards,
Aneesh

See, value addition has to be taken up by your efforts..Nothing much would come up on its own on a silver plate..I can point to some transitions that people have made through PGSEM

Candidate A : - Before PGSEM - engineer in Oracle ,
- after PGSEM - program manager in Microsoft
( dont ask salary and all -- I dont know 😃 )

Candidate B : - Before PGSEM - engineer in Oracle
- after PGSEM - market analyst - principal analyst in Oracle
- Now he quit for his own venture

Candidate C: - Before pgsem - PL @ Motorola
- After pgsem - BDM @ Motorola

-- If u ask me whether everyone would get this kind of roles, the answer is NO..Its you own effort that goes into getting into these roles, both inside and outside the company. PGSEM has all the ingredients for any MBA related transitions..But nothing would come to you automatically..U'll have to fight for it .

Similarly there are few ppl who moved to IT consultancy and business development of various companies through this course. I admit brand value is less than PGP..And I would not advice taking it over PGP ..but in the long run, the IIM tag would throw opportunities towards you.

When you go for interview you need all your acads grade sheets plus an approval letter from employer -- Please see pgsem.iimb.ernet.in for all such details
