A Profile of Successful Applicants

Our interview questions are designed to identify your stengths and weaknesses for all of these criteria. We particularly probe the following five areas:

a) Professional experience. We seek students who have been exposed to the reality of business and the exhaustive commitment that is required to succeed in top management. Ideal candidates usually have experience working in a managerial position for at least two years after completing their bachelor's degrees. Be prepared to discuss your experience, including volunteer work, and how it shaped your understanding of business.

b) Knowledge of the field. Be prepared to discuss different specialty areas in business and their responsibilities. Interviewers will also expect you to discuss current issues in business, including the economy, taxation, foreign competition, the role of technology and ethical challenges in the field.

c)Personality. Leaders must communicate clearly, handle complex issues, manage stress and successfully interact with people from all walks of life. Be prepared to demonstrate that you are a happy, healthy, well-adjusted person with a strong commitment to leadership. Also be prepared to discuss your experience working on project teams, including situations which yielded less-than-optimal results.

d) Motivation. For many years, applicants flooded top MBA programs because they wanted to make the "big bucks." Others applied because they weren't happy with their current job prospects. Sadly, we've interviewed many candidates who could not articulate why they wanted the degree or what they hoped to accomplish in the future. This is an obvious red flag in the admissions process. Top business schools use the interview process to carefully screen out applicants who are fuzzy on their goals. Be prepared to clearly explain why you want/need an MBA, why you are applying now, and why you selected that particular school.

e) Balance. We seek applicants who are well-rounded and well-adjusted. There's nothing more disheartening than an applicant who looks great on paper who can only talk about his/her grades. There's much more to life and business than memorizing and regurgitating facts. Successful applicants are animated, full of life, with enthusiasm for their family, friends and the world around them. This is reflected through knowledge of current events, sustained interest in hobbies and outside interests and a strong interactive role in their communities.

First steps on how to approach an interview?
Do your homework
Have well thought out answers for questions such as "What are your strengths? Why are you right for that particular business school? Why is that particular program right for you?":-o

It shows organization and forethought if you know some specifics about the program to which you are applying and can explain why those features fit well with your career goals. For example, if you are applying to the Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI), through some simple research you will discover that they are strong in Human Resource Development. Perhaps, you have worked with a recruitment company or have been a trainer in an institute. Relate these in the interview.

Don't Waste Time
Don't waste time discussing things that are already indicated on your application. You can elaborate if the topic illustrates something about your character and preparedness for the b-school experience, but do not be redundant.

Remember that the first impression you create is very important. When asked to say "something about yourself", most candidates just blurt out their schooling, college, marks and qualifications. All this is already there in the application. Why tell the interviewer something he/she already knows. Ideally, you would want to use this opportunity to show how you are different from the thousands of other applicants, not to blend in to the crowd.

A final word on approaching this question. After you have said what you have to say - don't venture any further. Don't drone. You just might say something foolish. Sometimes interviewers don't interrupt in order to give the candidate the impression that he has not spoken enough. This is just a stress/error inducing tactic. Don't fall for it. If the pause gets too awkward for your liking, just add something like, "Is there something specific that you would like to know about me"

What to Expect in an IIM Personal Interview?
The focus of a B-school interview can range from specific questions about your job to broad discussions on life. Approach the interview as a conversation to be enjoyed, not as a question-and-answer ordeal. It may be about your hobbies - your recent cross-country trip. This doesn't mean that the interviewers are not serious. It just means that you're being sized up as a person and a future professional in all your dimensions.

Try to be your witty, charming, natural self. Donot try to put on. The interviewers will be able to see your masks through. Students, faculty, admissions personnel and alumni conduct interviews. Don't dismiss students as the lightweights.

It is important to have a good idea of "What you consider to be your greatest strength, why and what are some examples that show this", before you go into an interview. Although the interviewer will most likely ask some pointed questions, you may also encounter something as broad as "So, tell me about yourself." These open ended questions are usually the ones that help you lead the interview.

Either way, you should have in mind what you want to convey about who you are before you go into any interview. Lack of preparation is a common complaint among interviewers, and if you are prepared, you will stand out among your competitors.

My question is
Is there any tailor made answer to the question "Why should we take you" ?
The reason being whatever I say the panel always replies that this quality is present in others as well.Whatever it may be,the reply is the same:WHAT IS THAT XTRA???
Is it that I need more introspection or is it that I need to paraphrase in such a manner that there is no further questioning...or there's some other problem


Let me tell you one of my friends' experience for a similar question at TAPMI. Well, this is not the ideal answer but the way he used to tackle the situation.

Panel: Tell us 3 reasons why you want to join TAPMI

Candidate: 1. I satisfy the eligibility criteria.
2. I want to do an MBA.
3. I believe TAPMI will be the right place which will let me have an edge over managers from other schools.

Panel: These are reasons common to every MBA aspirant who comes here. Then, why should we select you alone?

Candidate: Because, if you select me, I assure you that, I will make you feel proud for doing so, in the years to come.

Panel: Moved on to next question.

I felt this to be one good reply to see off those kind of questions.

Blazers / western formal are allowed for girls ...

If your interview centre is in one of the smaller towns of Maharashtra , I would recommend that you go for a formal indian wear ...

It Is Better If Its Perfectly Formal.....
Guys With Tie,Though Its Not Compulsion As Far As I Know.
Girls In Trousers & Shirt OR Indian Wear Like Chudidaar Kurta/Punjabi Suit...Though Chudidaar Kurta Luks Much Better In Indian Wear.
Correct Me If M Wrong...Its My Experience!
