iam from gen, btech electrical, expecting 75%ile, want to make my career in power sector, does any govt sector companies visit npti, is it worth joining npti. pls guide me

hi puys. i am presently in the first year at NPTI and can to the best of my knowledge furnish a few details... i dont have the exact figures but rough estimates

placements this year:
around 40 students out of 56 already placed
highest offer till now arnd 8.5 lpa
avg is somewhere between 5.5 and 6 lpa
major recruiters - PwC, Infosys, PTC India Ltd, Infraline, Feedback ventures, ABPS etc.

my assessment of the college:
faculty: good
infra: avg
placements: good
MDU university course: avg

the college DOES NOT GUARANTEE placements but has had a 100% placement record for reasons that are obvious to us now that we have been introduced to this sector and by virtue of being one of the very few colleges in the country offering this course and being much better than the rest.

last time the seats were increased to 120 from 69 after the first round of counselling due to which the cut off dropped sharply (but a friend informs me that it still wasnt below 70%ile) but thats unlikely to happen this time. though it is unpredictable but i believe the first counselling cutoff might not drop below 80%ile but those below 80%ile must not lose hope, for all you know, the cutoffs might plunge once again.

till last year everyone with a valid CAT score (above 25%ile) and academically eligible candidate (60% in B.E./B.Tech) was called for the GD/PI. those who are in the final year and havent received their final sem/yr marks can apply irrespective of whether their initial semesters' marks aggregate to 60% or not, but their final admission would be subject to their fulfilling the criteria.

MBA power management is a 4 semester course and consists of a 2 month compulsory internship in a company (internship placements are similar to job placements, done through college) sandwiched between the 2 years. on completion of the course you get a degree certificate of MBA power mgmt from MDU (not NPTI) but that is inconsequential.

the fees is Rs.75,000/-per semester exclusive of Rs.10,000/- per semester towards hostel fees. we pay anywhere around Rs.1500-2000 per month towards mess charges. the mess is a co-operative mess managed by the students themselves. the quality of food is good. hostel accommodation is optional, not compulsory. there are quite a few day scholars in my batch.

the summer placements for my batch will start next month. for more info about the summers of my seniors have a look at this
http://www.npti.in/pdf/NPTI_Placement_Brochure.pdf

students from electrical engineering backgrounds understand technical concepts better initially but thats it. Even mechanical engg students have an advantage as far as understanding the concept of generation is concerned, but thats just one subject out of so many that are covered in the course. and for others these are just initial hiccups in understanding; after a month or so into the course it becomes simple and routine.

it is important to note that we are doing a management course here with power sector familiarization. so the technical background takes a backseat by the time we graduate. we are interested in learning the business of power rather than the technical aspects. thats not to say that a non-engineer can do the course just as well as an engineer if you're getting what i mean... at least an average technical know-how is a must.

though some utilities and a few other companies do like to hire electrical and mechanical background students, i have seen many students with IT and non-electrical/non-mechanical backgrounds getting much better jobs. once you are here, it all comes down to how sound your management skills and soft skills are and how well you do in the acads, aptis and interviews. go through the placement brochure to know more about the profiles of students at NPTI.

the types of job profiles that students usually get are consultant, management trainee, etc.

the companies that come for placements can be broadly classified into:
consultancy (PwC, ABPS, Feedback Ventures, Delloite, Mercados emi, etc
regulation (for interships only - CERC, DERC etc)
trading (PTC)
renewables (IREDA, Suzlon, Moser Baer etc.)
utility (Tata power trading, reliance infra, GMR etc.)
and some others like PFC for finance jobs
this year infosys took 6-7 students for IT implementation in power sector related jobs and is paying them between 6.5 - 7 lpa
the only PSUs that visit the campus are IREDA, PFC and PTC (which is a PPP)

for those who feel that they would rather not restrict their career scope to just power, this college is not for them. The power sector is growing like no other sector I know of (compared to even IT or any other sector you can think of. Youll fully appreciate what I am saying within your first 2 months at NPTI), whats more, there is a shortage of managers. Sometimes, NPTI runs out of students to place (meaning, the industry demands more). Those who are really weak in soft skills obviously find it hard to get placed but NPTI has been finding jobs even for them.

the data may not be 100% accurate and is based on my own experience at NPTI, my judgement and what I have gathered from my teachers, my seniors at college and those who are working.
