I don't see any thread for IIM-A related queries. So I am starting one. If there is already one, mods please take care. If people have any queries, I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge. I am sure other pgs at WIMWI would also pitch in soon.

Raven one thing I want to ask one thing ... How is a case study different from a GD???

and also if u know , how do these freaking B ppl give calls???

There are many types of GD
1. case study
2. current affairs
3. abstract
4. conceptual

are the most popular ones.

case study is a type of GD where a simple case is given, which would be a business situation - Marketing finance or HR (would be very simple )And people would be asked to discuss the possible solution. Anyway the coaching institutes will run you through these.

Whats that about freakin B calls? U mean IIM-B? If so last time, that was the only IIM that did not give me a call inspite of 5 years work-ex.

and I have no idea how did this thread go so far down..

I have got a call from IIM A with a percentile 99.37.

I just wanted to ask your help in general to guide us puys (and me of course) through the GD/PI thing...

what all should we expect to be asked in the PIs..
How much is our engg info(have just 5 months of work ex) important
Then, what to do in the GDs.. If you know what the A guys look for

and I know there's plenty of time to ask anything abt the Life in general of IIM A

so help us thru this tough period seniors!!!

thanks raven for startin this thread...

Is there any specific approach I need to follow for GD/PI at IIMA?

Hello Puys,

Have got a call from A. My scores

LR/DI - 96.68
VA - 99.27
QA - 98.20
Total - 99.59

Work ex - 29 months (As of Dec2006)
Graduated in Information Science and Engg from MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology in June 2004. Pretty good acads. But hardly any extra-acads.

So what do i expect in the interview? I think the questions may be more on my work-ex rather. Is it right??

Thanks 4 the help seniors 😃

Thanks for starting this thread Raven...

Mine may the most difficult case

Overall Percentile: 97.26

7 years workex..

Below average acads..58% in Engg...

What can I expect in Interview..By any chance will they dig my acads & also tell me how to defend when they ask me why not PGPEX...

Hi all

Congos on the call from IIM A.

A few general tips, otherwise queries might get repetitive.

GD- Case based only. Normally, its a caselet of one page. Very easy to understand. 5 mins to think, about 20 mins to discuss and a written summary at the end. Please take the written summary seriously as it counts to your final call. Normally, 9 members to a GD.

PI - Depends on ur form mainly. Be careful abt what u fll there, especially interests. IIM A Profs know everything under the sun. I got quizzed on football and politics, a frend of mine on Harry Potter. So be prepared to talk abt wht u write. No stress interviews generally, pretty relaxed panel. If you do not know, tell them that you do not know the answer. Average time abt 20-30 mins.

Good luck
IF you have any other queries , post them here

Hi Raven,

Thanks for such a wonderful thread.

I have a query regarding the GD ... I have heard that the GD is on a case study. Do you know of any exceptions, or is it that IIM-A always gives case study for GDs?

Thanks In Advance,
Rishi

Kudos to Seniors for starting suc h a nice thread to guide us

I have managed the much coveted A Call

Acads : X-86.5 ;XII - 87.1; BE(Mech) -77.8

(IT - Financial Soln provider for I Banks across the globe)

Any pointers to me

Thanks in advance

Good to see this thread finally up and running 😃 Ok, few starting tips :

1. @tintin: GD has been a case study since quite some time and there is no reason not to expect anything apart from that. However, by the time the PIs start, you guys should have enough prep for all kinds of GD....hence case study or not, u shud be ready for nething. But specific to IIMA, yes, in all probabilities, it will be a case study of the format described earlier by Raven.

2. You get very less time to write down the summary at the end of GD. And when the prof says stop....it means STOP. Dont even dare write a single word beyond that, else u r in trouble. Most of us had to leave sentences mid way, but thats fine...no probs.

3. PIs are generally acads heavy. In mine, 20 min was spent in engg acads even when I have 2 years work ex. So brush up ur few main subjects.

4. They can ask abt the GD during the PI. Like in mine, GD was on lottery/gambling and in the PI, he asked me if gambling is legalized in India or not, etc.

5. NEVER EVER LIE !! Learn to say No in an interview. Its perfectly fine. They dont expect u to be superhumans knowing everything under the sun.

6. Screwing up few questions doesnt mean u r out of reckoning. Its the questions that u answer that matter a lot, the way u answer them etc. Trust me, My A interview was the worst of all...Had given 2-3 completely wrong answers. But whatever I spoke was with confidence.

7. Please go though last year's GD/PI thread. Its the best prep u can get !! I will try to dig it out and post the link here.

Keep shooting the queries !!

Good to see junta pouring in their queries.

One common query seems to be about acads. And unfortutaley I shall not be able to put you at ease in this regard. As we say here, the A in IIM-A stands for Acads. So there is 90% probability that you would be grilled on your acads. no matter you have 5 months, 50 month or 5 years expereince. Last year even I was under the false impression that with 5 years IT work-ex, they would not grill me on my civil Eng. But that was not so. But luckily I got screwed majorly in my acads during my IIM-K interview (which I did not convert). So I was prepared for acads questions in the rest of the interviews and was able to answer acads questions quite well during my A interview. Having said that I would also like to mention that they would ask you only basic subjects and you need not be bothered about too advanced topics. But you should be clear with the basics of physics, maths and engineering. It doesn't matter if you can not answer one or 2 questions. But you are expected to display reasonable knowledge in your acads.

They do grill regarding workex also. They also ask current affairs based questions. I had a lengthy discussion regarding how insurance works (I was developing a software for IT company at my job). They asked plenty of questions regarding insurance. Another friend of mine who worked in mortgages was grilled about that. I was also asked a lot about the issues in the Israel conflict.

And they do not let you off with one word, one sentence answers. They probe deep to check whether you really have an understanding of the issue they are questioning you about. So if you do not know something, don't try to bluff. Say you don't know and wait for a question regarding which you can really display a thorough understanding.

Ofcourse there may be variations depending on the professors who take the interview. Go through last years thread which has detailed expereinces of various people as mentioned by Vinz.

@prem ravi - Don't worry too much about you work-ex. We have people here with 6 years, 8 years and 16 years work ex. The guy with 8 years work ex had percentile very similar to yours. So you defenitely have a good chance. When I get to the campus I will check up what he was asked in the interview and let you know.

3. PIs are generally acads heavy. In mine, 20 min was spent in engg acads even when I have 2 years work ex. So brush up ur few main subjects.

Damn I was scared of that :(
Seniors, any suggestion on a good book for Electrical & Electronics where I get to brush up most of the stuff??:)

Also here's the link forlast year's GD/PI exp IIM-A GD/PI experiences (2006) - PaGaLGuY.com Forums

Thanks for starting this thread.

Since I'm from a science-oriented background (Biotech is half tech/half science here at KGP), will i be asked in depth questions abt subjects like Biochemistry or Microbiology? And since I have a Btech, do i have to brush up basic concepts of physics as well?

3. PIs are generally acads heavy. In mine, 20 min was spent in engg acads even when I have 2 years work ex. So brush up ur few main subjects.

Now this is the part i dread. And if it is Maths and Physics which they ask about then i am screwed. I think i would have forgotten the basics also. I last studied both in my 2nd sem engg and that was 5 yrs ago. Any pointers on how to brush up on this?? What type of questions are asked here??

And I guess as I am an Info Science (IT) Engg, they will grill me on IT related stuffs too

got the A call
