As per me one should start with Number system as it is one of the heavy chunks of the CAT paper..

I don't know If I am the right person to write a reply here. I am still a learner and am giving my observations.

1) Let us understand what CAT does in "Quant" section. I have analysed last 10 years papers and I found that this paper contains a good mix of conceptual, Easy, Difficult and logical(Quantitative logic based) questions. If we will analyse an actual CAT paper, around 5-6 questions are easy ones(direct application of concepts), 6-7 around medium difficulty level(questions twisted to confuse aspirants) 3-4 difficult questions(sometimes taken from competitive examinations like olympiad of 9th and 10th,most easy ones and relevent to CAT exam)

2) Now Let us analyse what should be approach to quant section. For a non engineerng background student, It is advised that to start with airthmatic section and then gradually move to other topics. For an engineering background student, the stress should be on changing the approach as engineers tends to confuse maths with quant section. CAT questions emphasize on problem solving rather than pure maths questions.

3) Let us see how to study for quant. Please start with a basic material and complete all the questions in basic material.I will suggest Time material as time material is quite exhaustive. The work does not end here. Once you complete making basic material , revise it again and again but not with pen and paper, revise it mentally, just retrace the steps required to solve the problems.

4) Let us see how to attain maturity in this section. To attain maturity students should keep looking for alternate methods and should keep acquiring new concepts. Many forums, E-books and online sites help in this regard. One should also learn from mocks by analysing them properly. One should try to work on "Number System" and "Geometry" a little more as these are favourite nowadays.

5) When I wrote CAT first time, I was very casual about it and I always had a lazy approach towards it that I will see all the questions and will do the ones which are based on known concepts. This has always worked in my favour. The idea is not to take the section as a challenge and start solving in the given order. First get into rhythm by solving some easy ones and then start the ones which look tough. This section will always have some questions that can be solved by anyone who has gone through basic material. Please work on the basics. This is the most important step. Practice basic and medium level questions from Time quant material(or any book you have) as much as you can.

Happy learning. You can pm me if required further help.

CAT became easier these days. So, people having non maths background should not be worried about.

Start with easy topics from Arithmetic, then Algebra and Geo.
If you are fine with higher maths, it's ok; otherwise DI could be your best bet.

i feel preparation of QA is ideal by starting with "NUMBERS"
