Nice to see the increasing enthusiasm every year. I started following FPM threads since 2008 and the interest in doctoral studies has grown exponentially over the last few years.

One suggestion. Can we ask the mods to change the title of this thread to 'PhD / FPM 2013'

Reason:
1. People interested in PhDs at IITs and Indian universities have started posting on FPM threads. Why don't we include such discussions officially?
2. Many people don't know what FPM is and come to the thread to ask this question. The title will be self explanatory to such people.

Valid points raised again.
This will ensure that there are not parallel threads running for FPM and PhD, and more discussions can be accommodated here itself.

I also second your view regarding increasing interest in FPM/PhD. Awareness has surely gone in the last two years I have been in this program. Hopefully it continues to grow in future as well.

My profile in brief -
SSC - 75%
HS - 70%
B.SC - 53% - (a big worry for me)
M.Sc - 63%
MBA - 65% (approx)
Work Ex - 4 yrs
Am i eligible for FPM? Considering my low score in B.Sc, is there any chance of my profile getting selected if CAT score is good?

I am just about to join MBA...
Firstly, would a Masters from Mumbai University (MMS) be better or a PGPM from MDI, IMT etc for further pursuing a fellowship or Ph.D?
Secondly, how important are the graduation marks of B.tech? I plan to study during MBA but not much that can be now done about graduatin marks :(
Thirdly, Any special preparation to be done for application preparation (domestic and abroad) as i still have around 1-2 yrs to apply. Something which i should do to build up my profile?
Fourthly, last 2-3 years, i am very much into economics, but i don't really have a background in economics except self study. Would this be a hindrance if i want to pursue fellowship or Ph.D in economics related field? anything which can be done over 2 years to rectify this?

Any guidance would be very helpful and highly appreciated.

No. Institute matters more than what your degree reads. However, an MMS from JBIMS would be at par.

Many factors are taken into consideration. Graduation marks is just one of them. You can counter that with better marks in MBA and higher CAT score.

For abroad, try to get involved in some research projects, present in some conferences. Also try to focus on the area in which you want to do PhD

Abroad: If you want to do PhD in economics, the competition will be very intense as you will be competing against people who already have economics degree. You will have to apply to the Finance area in a business school and get a finance PhD.
India: You stand a good chance if you can show genuine interest in the subject.

Study more of eco and fin. If possible, you can also do a MSc in Eco parallely from Idol-MU or IGNOU.

Workex: 2 years in Tata Steel Ltd. in Operations domain.

Right now I am pursuing my MBA from VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur
My CGPA till now is 8.38

I also have a Summer Internship from Heinz India LTD. in Operations domain. Apart from these I have done a few trainings and projects in production and operations during my Btech.

I moved into the MBA course instead of directly into a FPM course as I was confused about the coursework and studies in management.

I have an interest in teaching since I taught JEE students 7 years ago. I have also developed an interest in research in the last few years.Now after experiencing the MBA course I am confident that I can pursue the FPM couse from next year onwards.

I have an interest in operations considering my backgrounds and my strengths. I also have the constraint to stay in India due to some family commitments.

I want to know that given my profile and the reasons I have put above am I a worthy candidate for the FPM course in the operations domain. Should I go for FPM right after my MBA or work for a few years first. I already have a job ex and I don't want to wait any longer.

Your useful inputs would be helpful.

If you have decided to get into academics, you can join a doctoral program right after MBA. Though it does help to get a couple of years workex after MBA.

Your profile is good and you should target the top IIMs. For Operations you can also look at the IITs which have strong operations departments. The advantage of IITs will be that you will get coursework waiver which you won't get in the IIMs and you will have to repeat your first year of MBA again. Disadvantage: stipend is a bit less. I think 18k. Also no tuition fee waiver. Though you can apply for NDF fellowship of AICTE for additional funding (only some IITs and IIMs are eligible).

If you see the profiles of current FPM students, you will see many who have joined with only a B.Tech. So, I guess it doesn't matter as long as you get into a good school for your FPM. However, my personal opinion is that a little bit of work-ex is necessary.

The best places in India are ISB, the top IIMs and XLRI.

The top places worldwide are Harvard, Wharton and INSEAD (in terms of number of publications in top tier journals in last 5 years).

10th : 69.8 %
12th : 80.8 %
B.Pharm : 67.6 % (in 2010)
CAT 2009 : 87.55 percentile
MBA (DTU, Delhi) : 73.4 % (Supply Chain & Marketing) 2012
Not very great extra curriculars.

I have a strong inclination towards carrying a doctorate in near future (read within two years) in supply chain management.

As of now I do not have any work experience, but will be starting my Job as fuctional consultant in CSC in supply chain domain soon.

Guys please help in solving these queries :

As I am having a modest profile, what extra should I do, while being in the job, to build up a decent profile to be considered in good b-schools?

Which b-schools should I aim at for supply chain management domain?


I did applied for december 2011 UGC-net and qualified that, but what I could gather from the websites if IIMs is that for operations I need to appear in CAT, is it really so??

If it is so then what is the percentile range required in CAT at the various IIMs for getting call in FPM. I am completely out of touch for sometime and and have to work hard in that because of my non-math background.

Your profile is good enough. For FPM/PhD you will have to take the required test if NET is not acceptable for your domain. Each institute has specific requirements for standardized tests and you will have to fulfill those.

Since you are interested in a sub-area of Operations ie SCM, I would suggest that you go through the profiles of the professors at different institutes and see which professors do research in your area of interest.

A research paper can only add value to your profile. So if you have one, nothing like it. But most people getting into FPM/PhD do not have research papers.

I have not been through the selection process at any of the IIMs or IITs. If you have queries regarding these institutes, send a PM to the students of these institutes. You can find them in the previous year's thread. I think their term has just started which is why I am all alone in this thread. :)

I have been through ISB's selection process and they do give value to research experience. In the first batch 2 out of the 3 students had research papers.
