CASE/GD :
Topic:
The case was an ethical one. It was about this girl going to a live in a community to learn about how they lead their lives. To be one among them she is forced to make an ethical decision.
This is the gist of the case.

Number of Ppl present : 10 (sex ratio 1:1)
Time: 10 mins to initially read the case and write down our understanding.
15 mins to Discuss.
By writing down the understanding what I mean is a sheet was provided to write down the case in our words. Its a fair copy and it is evaluated I believe.

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
The discussion was ok types. Many views on ethics, social responsibility and obviously what this girl should be doing.
There were many 1 on 1 conversations happening. This should have been avoided.

I personally felt I should have contributed more. Spoke only 3-4 times.

Other Salient Details: No summary was asked.

Panel Members Intro:(if possible names and their specialisation)
3 members. All young. Lets call them P1,P2 and P3.

Questions(with your answers):
I was the second candidate. P2 called me in.

P3 : How was the GD?
Me : Was ok.. but could have improved.. blah blah...
P3 : Why? What are the improvements you think?

Now begins the ethical Section of my interview
P1 : Made a reference to a biotechnology experiment and tried to give connect it with the answer I gave.
Me : Answered
P3 asked for the file
P1 : OK.. I will give you an analogy. Consider a visitor who goes to Jarawah in Andamans and gives biscuits to aborigine children. The rules dont allow this. So how do you justify that?
Me : Said sometimes emotions rule over ethics. So these things happen.
P1 : So if this continues to happen, the children who are taught to gather their food by hunting now become used to getting this from visitors will start to ask them, thus making them beggars. Is this good for the society?
Me: gyan...

Finally I was in a dilemma..:lookround:
Now P2 comes
P2 : Tell me about yourself
Me : answer.. before I completed
P2 : Why biotechnology?
Me : Answered.. before i Complete
P2 : dont you feel infrastructure is nascent in India? Is it a reason for you to change the field?

P1 is kinda convinced. Asked for name in between for the things I talked about. I couldn't answer.

P2 : Talk about your work.
Me : answered.
P2 : what is mean?
Me : told.
P2 : Do you use statistical tests?
Me : not so far. It depends on the project.
P2 : if you dont use statistical test how do you validate things?

GT

P.S: I am sorry, If i hurt the feelings of fellow GD mates/profs..no offence meant..

@amjain1991
Dude, going by the no of times you have mentioned, "Answered", I am pretty sure that you are through....
All The best for the result..

X-83, XII-88(AP State), Btech civil NIT Warangal-8.7
Cat- 94.35, work- 6 months in HPCL as project engineer.
Not bright in exra curiculars.
GD: We were 21 people on 22-02-11, divided into 3 batches, my batch got 6. 10 mins to read and write abt topic, 15 mins to speak.
Topic: XYZ company is a pro in Genetic engineering and files a patent on GE modified tomato and applies to National food and drug association (NFDA). this products pros and cons were given in the narration like good for vitamins, nutrients etc but some activists protest that the testing on animals should not be done and it may have long time consequences. The question is being a member of NFDA would you label it or not / discuss.
I could not write much as I have less knowledge of it. Everybody spoke in the GD, but could not conclude, it got deviated at times. After coming out, I asked all, nobody was satisfied. My performance was average.
PI:Mine was no.2 in the list. so was called after no.1( just had to wait for 30 mins).
Interview panel: three profs roughly in 35-45 age. p1, p2 ,p3 say.
P2: Tell me abt urself.
Me: blah blah..
P1: tell me abt your family in particular
Me: told abt my father's ocupation, mother, sister...etc.
P1: Whats ur interest in ur discipline
Me: Water resource systems.
P1: Design a septic tank for me.
Me: I gave a very vague picture of it. not convinced, told him that it doesn't come under water resources.
P1: But I'm sure u must come over it in some subject
Me:Yes sir.
P1: hmm..Why is a deck of the bridge arch shaped?
Me: I explained abt pre stresing, how tendons are parabolic in profile and fabricated to that shape..not convinced.
P1:But why that shape?
Me: Maximum bending moment at centre, and deflection also, to nullify that...
P1: Doesn't look convinced. Ok. I plan to have a cantilever roof of say 4m, initially but i want ot change it to 7m say.then how do u....
Me: I drew the bending momnt profile of the cantilever
P1&p3;: suddenly p3 came into existence why that profile. p1 also asked.
Me: Explained him that maximum is at the clamp support for any uniform load taken. When u extend it by 3 m more, bending moment increases, similarly ur reinforcements will be more and reinforcements shall be kept at the top fibre.
P1: sure at the top?
Me: Yes sir, at top. ( may be stressing me out or may be he doesn't know)
P2: Ok , u r working in HPCL, ur work expe?
Me: 6 months by now as an engineer.
P2: so what do u do? (by looking at what i wrote in the form, I dont think anybody is even referring my file)
Me: explained abt quality and quantity certifying..
P2: How do u maintian the quality of concrete?
Me: we send the sample to nearest lab and get deign mix of say M20, it will be something like 1:1.5:3, make sure that the contractor mixes in that proportion and take cubes for 7 and 28 day strength.test them...
P2: what do u exactly test (frustaded slightly by my lengthy answer)
Me: we test the compressive strength of the cube whose dimensions are 150X150X150 by simply aplying F/A. avg of 3 samples must be so and so...gave him details abt IS456 of test procedure.
P2: in case the test result fails??
Me: As per the tender document, we have to offer a load test on that particular structure by the contractor, and if it still fails, there is a deduction clause in the tender, we will do it acordingly.
P2: U know abt "Gant chart" (dont know the spelling)
Me: NO sir, never heard of it.
P2: U know PERT?
Me: Gave a vague idea abt probabilistic estimation of deadline involved in a project..by considering statistic data...not so convinced..
P2:Ok.. tell me abt any rural development programs u know by the govt.
Me: I said i don remeber, but it may be Rajiv gandhi rural employment prog.
P3: sure it is after rajiv?
Me: No, sir.
P2: what is it..abt..
Me: it gives 100 days of employment to waged labours.
P2: is it? just labours?
Me: I think so .
P2: what's the wage?
Me: 125/- i think per day.
P3: u know of urban programs?
Me: Metro..hyd is going to get one.
P3: Have u ever observed "JN..."written on our banglore buses
Me: NO, sir
P3: where do live? hyd or banglore?
Me:abt to say anantapur..P2 also said to P3 the same.(p2 is the guy following my file and form)
P1: SO, this Rajiv...is he a grand son or grand nephew of mahtma gandhi?
Me: Mahtma adopted Feroz..Feroz married Indira and Rajiv is born..but I think there is some controversy in it.
P3:u know abt golden quadrangle?
Me: i told him..abt NHAI's highways forming in that shape connecting main ciites.
P3: what are those cities?
Me: I know only abt one highway NH-5 from chennai to kolkata.
P3: ok..in this process. lot of people will be losing their lands..
Me: i interrupted..sir, u dont need to go for highways for that question..even in my site, we acquired 65 acres and lot of farmers lose their lands..and feel sad abt that.
P3: But, how is it ethical yaar, u take lands and they get nothing..
Me: sir, we are going to build water tanks for one village and a school for other, the proposal is already kept under our CFD(committe of functional directors) we are sure that it will work out.
P3: (not convinced..) no..even though u are building your tanks...or whatever..it doesnt justify.as an engineer-in-charge of ur site, what do u do? is it ethical.
Me: Its not ethical sir, but we in LPG department run the businees in losses, there is no profit for us as such..the product is highly subsidized. but its a product that everybody needs. as u know that 80% of the market in AP is controled by HP gas and the entire rayalasema consisting of 5 districts does even have 1 LPG plant..so there is an urgent need of it..even collectors of the districts approached/forced us to have one.that's why we have a plant in construction now.
P3: how do u price the petroleum products..

You people please rate my performance..
My advice: take Cat admit card and photo ID card with you which will be checked before GD. Interview has 3 parts: knowledge on ur grad, curent affairs, ethical stands.. it all matters how much u can turn/divert it into your strong areas..I could not do it that good...
best of luck to all.. i don't think i have much chance with low percentiles, and mediocre acads and below avg GD..i am leaving my interview perfo up to you.. expecting for a miracle to happen...may be in waiting list..and then..!!!
Best of luck to all..
PS: I posted detailed ans on my technical qns..just to help people on same background..civil.
