@luxor sincere advice is to prepare the answer yourself in most positive way from your point of view...coz interviewers though... just look for positive answer...it is important that ur decision is right fr u...so u don't say...after getting in, that banking is also not ur cup of tea :)....btw u need some hints anyway to brainstorm...me too... will share my views/answers - if I get through...till then don't wry

banking is the booming sector..whereas IT sector goes through recession from time to time.

very high growth opportunities unlike IT

most importantly job security is there which is difficult to find in IT sector.

and as you'll appear in sbi assoc. you may also point out that brand image of sbi is very precious and if selected ,you'd never miss the opportunity to work with the largest commercial bank of the country etc etc.

@luxor tell them that u always liked jobs which involve customer interaction...also that manager job offers many challenges which you feel will be interesting and that you will be able to do justice...you can also add point like you were unable to get the opportunities you were looking in your present job ( like say that you were made to handle more of maintenance phase work than development coding work or something like that..its just an example)....but make them feel that you are genuinely interested in banking job and that you would be able to bring many skill sets to the job and since banking sector is also becoming technological intensive and entering into new phase you would like to be part of this journey...

@luxor nope mine is from IT(2 years) to sabbatical from job for past couple of years for competitive exam preparation...I was also worrying about the same question ...i had my SBI PO interview on 17th Oct...luckily they didnt ask anything about my previous job or competitive exam preparation..

@luxor I too was preparing for this Q for my interview.. but seriously in my interview I cudnt answer it satisfactorily myself.. I thought of saying that I have interest in bank, its a stable job, SBI has reputation like no other.. But in actual interview they didnt gave me much time to explain all these.. They quickly moved to other Qs..

Personally I wasnt happy with this.. So I may not be able to guide u more i guess..

Explaining about your soft skills you have gained in your previous job in such a way that you would be of more usefullness to the bank with your abilities is one way of convincing.                                                                                                                                 second alternative answer could be that, your engg. background has helped you to gain good aptitude and quick number crunching ability. job secutiry, job stability, growth opportunity, social status,... etc.
