McKinsey & BCG hire 8 each, Investment Banks increase offers as IIM Ahmedabad kicks off placements

IIM AhmedabadTowards the end of last December, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad had announced major changes to their placements process. The institute would move from a four-day high-tension process to a more relaxed system stretched over several weeks wherein companies offering similar roles would spend a weekend in campus and hire more thoughtfully. The new process kicked into action this weekend, the cluster featuring international investment banks, global strategy and niche consults and private equity & venture capital firms.

Both the Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey and Co made eight offers each, including pre-placement offers made to students who had interned with them last summer.

“This year several investment banks like Bank of America-Merrill Lynch came back on campus for recruitment after skipping the process last year. While as per institute policy we do not release the total number of offers, almost all recruiters are making more offers than last year,” said the institute press statement.

The new process allows recruiters to interact with the students for a longer duration. “The relaxed atmosphere in and around the interview rooms were a pointer that we have moved in the right direction,” the press release quoted faculty in-charge of placements Prof Saral Mukherjee as saying.

At the time of this press release (8:15 pm) Cluster One interviews were still in progress.

But they have included number of ppos in arriving out that figure of 8. That would not reflect current scenario since jobs offered nearly 9 months ago are also accounted for.

Any idea about the profiles of these guys who got into McKinsey and BCG

DEVILISHANGEL

McKinsey and BCG in general (not from iim-a etc) look for “profiles” per se. they have 3 types of jobs-3 types of analysts to be precise when you apply for the initial stages of job.
when it comes to colleges, it has a different set of agenda….
McKinsey, which has a McKinsey Knowledge Centre (McKc) in India has different set of tests which you need to qualify through to make it into their offices. McKc currently has students from a lot of colleges like the IIMs but they also have (plain simple graduates) like DU,CU,Presidency, jadavpur Univ,KJ SOM and a lot of other colleges….
What all consultancies (Business Consultancies not IT ones) is that you have some sort of specialised knowledge (functional area of business) in tandem with a lot of genralised knowledge which is accentuated with EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD lateral thinking and problem solving.

(no, i don’t work with McKc but i have worked for a consulting company and i will always prefer one :D like McKc in my specialised area-you get paid to think differently! what more do you want in life?)

How come Deloitte, TAS, Feedback Ventures, HUL, P&G, American Express and Standard Chartered ended up being grouped together? I thought it was supposed to group companies offering similar profile. As they had mentioned cohort would mean offering similar profile where Goldman Sachs and SBI would recruit in the same day.

It seems like the same o’l process spread over multiple weeks :P

what is TAS btw

shoaibmohamed
#23 February 21, 2010, 6:26 pm

Tata Administrative Services… Its a 1yr training program after which you would be posted in advanced positions within the Tata group of companies. AFAIK it visits only A,B,C,L,XL,FMS

rik_12
#24 February 21, 2010, 10:48 pm

@Shoaib…TAS walked out of recruitment from IIM L and FMS last summer due to confidential issues…this year they have recruited for finals from FMS just on special request from FMS Admin.

#25 February 21, 2010, 10:52 pm

@shoaib…just following up to the last post..they recruit for a different profile from XL as compared to A,B,C..tis for their HR programme.

does TAS recruits engineers ??

suyash_rix
#29 February 22, 2010, 12:38 pm

TAS is a program aimed at finding able managers with leadership qualities for various subsidiary companies of Tata group. It does not recruit engineers

caterpilar
#30 February 22, 2010, 12:47 pm

Hey Shaoiab, rik and others I have heard TAS has age limit of 27 is it true what are the other elligibilty criterias.

caterpilar
#31 February 22, 2010, 12:49 pm

@Suyash, AFAIK TAS does recruit engineers but only TATA group and that with rating above 4 and a good GMAT score.

suyash_rix
#32 February 22, 2010, 1:25 pm

@ caterpillar
Yes the upper age is 27.
TAS recruits only from the b schools mentioned above 4 IIMs , XLRI and FMS.
The fact you are talking about recruiting engineers is that they conduct inhouse recruiting which means that suppose an engineer working in any Tata group company performs well. He can be recruited to a managerial position. However this cannot be compared with campus recruiting for obvious reasons

chunin
#33 February 22, 2010, 3:36 pm

AFAIK apart from IIM ABCL , XL and FMS TAS also recruits from SP Jain
