IIM Ahmedabad modifies placement process to handle increasing batch sizes

IIM A logoTo combat the challenge of arranging jobs for increasingly large batch sizes, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad has decided to do away with its day-Zero process of placements and adopt a ‘cohort’ system, according to a press note released by the institute on December 23, 2009. The new system will stretch the placements process over one to two months (unlike four to five days in the older system) and is designed to make for more thoughtful career choices.

The new system will go live for the final placements of the class of 2010 in February 2010, informed IIMA.

How does the ‘cohort’ system work? According to the press note, the placement process will span across continuous weekends over two consecutive months. Groups of companies offering similar roles will form cohorts and come to the campus on the two days of a particular weekend and students interested in the role offered by the cohort can participate in the placements. The collective preference of the batch will decide the sequence of the cohorts. Hence, if an investment bank offers an HR opening, it shall be a part of the HR cohort and not the finance cohort.

Would this mean that a company offering multiple roles will have to visit the institute multiple times? According to Prof Saral Mukherjee, Faculty Chairman of IIMA placements, in such a situation the company will be allowed to interview students for each of their (different) profiles at once. Their results, though, will be revealed only during the placement weekend of that particular cohort. He added, “We will also take steps such as conducting interviews through video conferencing to reduce the transaction costs for the companies.”

As the companies will stay on the campus for a period of two days, it will give the students ample time to make an informed decision about the job and the company. There will be a break of five days between two cohorts to help students recuperate and prepare for subsequent interviews. This is in contrast to the fast-paced day-process where hiring decisions were made after interviews that lasted for a few minutes. Interviews scheduled in close succession also took a toll on the students. Also, unlike the day-process, the companies will not be slotted as ‘day-zero’ or ‘day-one’ companies in the cohort system.

To power the technology behind the new system, the institute has also created ‘Talentbouquet’, an online tool intended to help in improving the interaction between the students and the firms using tools such as chatting, forums and alumni interaction.

The increased time of the placement process does not seem to have met with any opposition from the students of IIM Ahmedabad, who would logically be wary of a situation in which competing b-schools following the day-process will fill up vacant jobs in companies. Prof Mukherjee commented, “There shall be no competition with any other institute that is completing their placements before us. The system was run through the students and they all agreed to it. In any case, it is a question of a career and not just a job.”

The batch size of the Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Management grew from 270 in 2008 to 312 in 2009. The Institute is planning to admit a total of about 450 students in PGPM and PGP (Agri-business) in 2010. Placing such large number of students in a matter of four to five days would eventually have become an unwieldy predicament for IIMA.

In my opinion this is a very thoughtful step taken by IIM A as it will eliminate the unnecessary and mindless rivalry among students as well as companies to secure a better slot. This will make the students free from pressure as they would not have to face the humiliation of not getting a slot 0 company (although that student never wanted the finance/IB/consulting profile, that student dreamt of a Systems/IT profile but he had to sit for slot 0 coz of the peer/family/society pressure)
I hope other bschools also adapt this system and help students choose their dream career rather than the slot0 job.

This is a move that will result in many IIMA students not being placed. The main advantage of the placement process followed across IIMs so far was that every student got placed because those who got placed early exited the process. While recruiters will like this “cohort” process as they are not pitted against other types of recruiters in their slot, the students will suffer. While the top students will get the job they want anyway, those at the last quartile will probably not get any job at all. If you are keen on marketing and the marketing cohort weekend is over and you have no job its tough for you to get a job in other cohorts that your profile does not suit. It is better to keep a rolling process after the initial slots are over. Check out my earlier 3 part article to understand this issue better.

Such “thoughtfulness” would have served them even more when they planned Cat 2010!

@ganesh: i agree to what you are saying in parts, but i also believe that students who don’t know why they are doing an mba will be the ones in trouble and i think they heartily deserve it.
btw, the “false” excitement should go away for the better. deserving students from all around the scpectrum should get more scope rather than from a certain school just because the school has the name xyz attached to it.

its no secret as to what happened in the summer placements this year in iim-a and iim-c and other iim’s no matter how much the committee tries to blur it out.

i think this system is better for students who know what they want from their life.

a much needed initiative to ward off the image of “placement agencies” that b-schools have become.

i just read the complete article of Ganesh Sir and i would really like to thank him for writing such an excellent article..it really helped me learn few things …
On the issue of modified placement process i would like to say…that the previous process may not be efficient for a large group of students and the new system definitely have some flaws but they are sidelined by the benefits accrued by it..
Also the IIM’s are in the mood of expansion of seats due to the pressure of Hrd and demand of students so they really have to change their previous process and i believe they have choosen the right time to change their placement procedure

Good Initiative. Other top Colleges need to understand the advantages of the same and follow suit!

it’ll not work… very few students will be clear about their career roles… i know a lot who were highly interested in marketing but went into fin coz of the package… the same happens here…
also… many are risk averse… i dont think they’ll wait till the company of their interest comes at the end of the second month… i bet!!

Huh! it won’t work in IIM’s… simple reason: most of the junta is inexperienced and unclear. But it is a good step for the experienced people, which rightfully deserve the MBA degree.
I think IIMA is trying to showcase itself as a international B-school and thus trying to follow policy of global schools.

I think IIMA is eventually going to stop taking in freshers for their PGP and try to compete at Global level. I think it is a good initiative but should have been taken after taking the batch profile into account!
