IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT for Sunday 29th November 2009, By Prometric

Prometric has updated their website with further information for the CAT Exam on the 29th of Nov.  On their site, they mention the following – “The launch of the computerized CAT involved the delivery of exams by Prometric into more than 360 testing labs at 104 individual locations. While a significant majority of the candidates successfully completed their exams on Day One, various technical issues arose at selected computers in approximately 50 labs that prevented approximately 2,000 exams from being delivered. Prometric has generated new appointments for these individuals and they are in the process of being contacted through SMS and email messages. Prometric technicians have been dispatched to address these isolated problems.

To avoid candidate inconvenience and to allow for the necessary repairs to be completed at the impacted labs, Prometric has scheduled a closure of these labs on Sunday, 29 November 2009. Candidates affected by this closure will also be notified by Prometric in the manner described above and provided with new appointments within this year’s testing period.”

The following labs will be closed on Sunday, 29 November (Please check your assigned lab listed on your Admit Card against the following list):

this is crazy…a large no. of candidates are going to go to their centres thinking of writing CAT and then be turned back from there…another big goofup…all repairs shud have been completed yesterday itself…

i always wanted cat to move out of normal testing of quant, lr, di..
Now this cat has given us a new dimension of testing..our prepardness for unexpected things is being tested now.. to be honest i am not at all dissapointed with what is happening.. I am being tested in an another section, thats it.

My exam is on Monday at Garden City, Bangalore (IILDR), which is closed today
hope this will get well tomorrow.. else i dont know whether i ll get a leave on the rescheduled date or not..
definitely this was not expected from prometric! IIMs.. are you listening??

Prometric has taken crores of Rupees for this kinda service?? As it is happening for the very first time, to be considerate,I wud say that if there are no more glitches in the coming days, then Prometric may be vindicated by the students who are yet to take the exam (but never by those who have already spolied their most important day!)

with all due respect to the iims ,this incidence has dampen their image .Never in the history of cat exams a candidate has to face such enormous amount of ambiguity just to give a exam.I think we all candidates deserve an apology. And i hope with all the big brain they posses the prometric and iim’s they hould think whether they have the mere capability to conduct this exam .

I had gone fully prepared to HR Institute at Ghaziabad on 28 well before 8 a.m. and was shocked to see that exam did not start till 10:30 am and eventually could not start my exam till 1 pm!! I had to return back not knowing what to do? Is any one responsible…

Folks!
Don’t act hysterical. Whenever there are new beginnings, these things are bound to happen. As future managers, you should learn to live with them. Afterall, life is not perfect!
And by the way, they (prometric follas) didn’t do it intentionally.
Now my humble request is to stop wasting your precious time & utilize it to study your weaker sections. This is golden opportunity for such guys…

all over India, they have 32 centres…can’t they test these 32 centres b4 hand once…cudn’t they train some 32 officials n send them to these centres to guide the proctors about userids and passwords.
is this is wat is called management..n now with thousands of students are in confusion and problems, and sending individual smses, emails…Y??

Guys chillax… I know the situation is bad…but there is nothing that we can do. Even if we crib it is unlikely that these exams will be declared invalid. So let’s make the best of what we have. Coz we all just get one shot. I dont want to sound as if im absolving prometric..all im saying is that we have one chance let’s stop cribbing and get to work…let’s bell the fractured cat…i think it’ll be easier than belling the jumpy cat

Well i gone through maximum replies to this post randomly and max people hate for the present situation.

Well before hating for the situation i hardly didnt found people who are still ashamed of our countries present condition. CAT is just like any other normal exam to enter into IIMs and remember IIMs are not the only doors for a student, many exams are there out and many lakhs of students are working hard on different sectors.

My point is as this is the first CAT Online, dont make it a serious issue because india is now getting online from all sectors, and its not possible in a year to get each and every thing completly online. Problems will be there and solutions do

I suggest all people to work hard on subject rather than worrying about postponement of exam, as allwin provided you the toll free number of prometric and as prometric promised to communicate either SMS or through email or call.

So you need to be proud that God given you more time now to again work hard on the syllabus to score a good rank

If any people who are much techie or software guys are there, think innovative and if you can do some crazy work create a CAT exam software that is light and can be fixed any where and can use dialup connection. as a alternative to the present situation

Not only Mba’s Mca’s MCom people change the world every individual got the right to change it whether he is educated or not

rite said niket..ppl chill…do u think they wudnt have tested the software before hand..its only happenin in few centres..guys believe me this is the first time they are doing it and it is a gud job for something happening for the first time..there hav been worse instances when many xams hav tried to go online and they totally had to cancel the online idea itself..

Yes… I too was a victim of d cat fiasco 2day….. Prometric ppl msgd me at 12.30 in d nyt dat my xam has been cancelled n will b rescheduled……… It breaks d momentum completely……… U r mentally prepared 2 write d xam n SPOOF they cancel d test fr ppl wid a certain test site code….. Thr wer ppl who hadnt received any msg bt barred frm d xam cz Prometric ppl expected dem 2 chek theor mails at 1 in d nyt (they had mailed dem, no msg)………. Its ironic dat India’s top mgmt inst indulges in such mismanagement……….

Nice !! As a biotech student i know that one has to go for animal trial before conducting human trials for a new drug. But Here ..amazing!!! direct human trials ..no intervention of any kind of Drug Controller — Really ..where else will prometric get such a big trial specimens?? :) :) Jai Ho !

I myself is having the experience of going to the centre to give the “CAT” test and after waiting there for 1 full hour or more got to know that no test today.
Niether the people out there nor the “PROMETRIC” did inform us before. After going through rigorous security checks and all those crap things we got to know that we wasted the entire morning. The prometric is not receiving any call in that number provied. They havent yet send us any mail or sms.
I really feel this company should be screwd up for creating such a disgusting situation. Beleive me even the online mocks of every institute is conducted in a far better infrastructure. These PROMETRIC people doesnt know their limitations and planning for something which they are not capable of doing.
Just hope that the situation does not go for the worse in the successive days when the no.of candidates taking the test will be even more

Is this india’s software prowness , at display for the netire world to see.and is this sort of management taught by these “jokers” at iim’s.what about transpareny and all the crap dished our by these iim profs.this project is a total failure and All people associated with the cat oraganising committee need to be fired immediately .let them get a taste of their own teaching…

dude…stop bein so hyper abt iim profs…wat do u expect them to do…all da problems in the exam were due to technical snags and improper infrastructure for which Prometric is responsible…da entire process of conducting CAT was outsourced to Prometric & NIIT for 200 crores…so vent out ur anger against these two institutions for mismanagement…

All these mishaps were expected…Such a large exercise cannot be expected to work perfectly the first day.although prometric could have tested their software and servers better…

Along with other technical issues, the application too hangs in the middle of the test. I appeared the test yesterday and the this happened to almost all the candidates sitting in my room. We raised our hand and the Prometric guy restarted the system. It requires 10-15 minutes, but the best thing is test resumes from the point it had hanged. This happens to somebody or other throughout the duration of the test which may be practically disturbing, but there is no other way but to carry on with this.
Also in my center, the sitting arrangement was too congested. So, it became really disturbing when the prometric guys came to trouble-shoot the problem with the person sitting next to me. They were 4 in number and were moving in and out several time to check the issue. And, everytime I had to move in and out with my chair to make a little space for them in the congested line so that they can slip in.

this is really disgusting.now the cat paper totally depends on the luck
if you are a poor soul who have chosen your centre as bhopal,banglore or those where the labs or centre were closed then you are the chosen one by the devil’s fraternity. even the paper which you will get to solve will bring its luck too.may be you will get sometopic which the other guy in some other slot will not get. which means there is no uniformity in the level of topics and question in the paper. so guys go for the closed divine intervention because you need it for your cat exams after all it is new pattern of iim synonyms of ekta kapoor serial and its captivating trun and twist

had my CAT today 29TH NOV. in d morning slot….dint read d prometric mail….so went to the centre 15kms from my home…that was not a problem for me as m a localite & had my bike…but there i saw ppl who came from near by small towns…who had their train reservations in d afternoon & evening….what abt them???

I read most of the comments and it is quite shocking to read that people still sympathize with Prometric & IIMs. It is easy to say all these words and calling other hysterical/cynics when you are not the one getting affected by this.

First of all this is not like any other normal exam. People work very hard to get in and it is on of the most prestigious exam (maybe after IIT-JEE). Students take heavy loans to get the degree. Many are waiting to get in for a big career change. As the exam is so huge it becomes the responsibility of IIMs to conduct it with utmost care.

Any small/big goof ups can create a lot of stress. Which might end up affecting the performance in exam. what about the guys who are coming from other cities to give the tests ? What about professionals who cannot take leave on such a short notice ?

People have the right to crib and please don’t ask them to stop.

… first they messed up everything with online registration. then they extended the deadline to purchase the cat voucher ( i don’t know for what reason they felt like extending the dates ) and then editing options. then cat server failed … and problems are still coming and coming….. ppl were having username problems….ppl were leaving n entering… it was annoying….pages kept stuck for one person………..WHAT IS GUARANTEE THAT THERE WILL BE NO LOOPHOLES IN RESULTS. MAY BE MISTAKES, AMBIGUITIES IN RESULTS……….THOSE WILL BE RESCHEDULE IN WHICH SOMEONE HAD START BUT NOT COMPLETED THEIR TESTS THAT’S MEAN NEXT TIME THEY GIVE TEST THEY WILL HAVE COPLETE IDEA ABOUT TEST STRUCTURE AND TYPE, HOW IS IT FAIR?

I am flying out of country on tuesday… with three years of experience, i waited till today to really give CAT…

now this…

Shame to all who executed this…

how come a management institute of excellence, cannot handle this show… they cant even handle the contractor (prometric) well. teach others, practice none??

I think the most embarrasing part of this fiasco is that CAT was referred to as ‘A national asset’ in an interview to The Economic Times on Friday. I guess it’s only fair that CAT is treated this way, going by the way our national assets have been treated so far :) Just got to know that a student took the test in Delhi without a timer. Now I dont know whether the test got completed in the stipulated 2.25 hrs…..

Why are guys here trying to defend “prometric”, “iims” or “cat committee”? Are you guys one of these?
It’s completely stupid to say that problems are bound to occur the first time, and saying that it’s all prometric’s fault!

A very simple rule in any IT company is to stress test the software: Test it till it becomes 99.99%(even more) effective. Test it day in day out, test with all weird scenarios, test with unacceptable inputs and what not! I am sure IIM profs know that (or whatever the CAT committee comprises of) This reflects on the leadership and management skills these guys have. Okay, prometric is allowed to have errors in system but these guys as managers have to get rid of them, that is all management school teaches(at a very basic level!) I am sure a shoddy MBA college in “village abc” will also teach that!!!!
Plus I would advice guys, very sincerely!, do not take up MBA for placements sake, you will regret it (later). IIMs have turned into placement centers where brilliant guys go and get placed based on their brilliance that’s it! No value addition from IIM, they will just act as facilitators for you to talk to all the mcKs and DBs, and if you are already from IITs you have good chance to get in otherwise learn to do RG, backstabbing etc… Those are the MBA lessons you get at IIMs (no team work that is for sure!)
Lets rise above these placement centers for our sake!

In first two days we have seen ,so many problem in cat exam. this time traffic is low ,so we are seeing some fail of center .
on 5th onwards traffic will increase,and than no server work properly .
its better to conduct it in paper pencil form on 7th.
so we can concentrate on that day.

the cat 2009 debacle….i went 2 the testing site( heritage college,kolkata) only to be said that the centre ws closed. no prior intimation by prometric, no nothing. and posting smthing at 2 last nyt dsnt make sense.wen one is supposed 2 have an exam today morning,do u expect him 2 check the site and then go 2 take the test? this is ridiculous.

They give you one chance per year… how many chances would they take to rectify their mistakes?
Online registration was a huge mess, rescheduled the deadlines twice! And now the exam itself!
This time the reality has come out bcoz of media hoopla! Believe me this happens every year… It’s never been a streamlined process with all sorts of unacceptable mistakes!
Wrong questions, misprints, bad centers, unprepared invigilators! etc has always been a trademark of CAT exam which unfortunately is treated as the most difficult exam to crack (Well “difficult or not” it is certainly the most biased xam!, and ofcourse without any reality check for future managers!) I am waiting for the day when people will start boycotting CAT and try for much better institutes such as ISB or abroad…

I am going to go for it tomorrow i.e. if I don’t get a message at 3 in the morning(which I’ll obviously check at 6) saying that Prometric guys didn’t want to be disturbed on a Sunday, just like Koda, and so the problems at Asia Pacific have still not been sorted out.
I’m going “EXPERIENCE” it.
Infact I have an amazing stress busting strategy in mind. I am going to start laughing the moment ‘the server crashes’ or ‘my screen goes blank’
I’ll raise my hand, call for help, and then start LAUGHING.
I’m going to then take my GMAT.
And go and study at Harvard:P

I am writing this commrent just to vent out my frustration:@:@…I came from Singapore for the CAT exam yesterday night to Bangalore. My center is among the 23 centres where the exam got cancelled..I tried contacting the customer care (the toll free number is so difficult to dial..u hv to hv the bsnl connection and wot not..y can’t they give a simple mobile numbr..how many of us can access landlines these days? )..cud get thru only once and the customer care respondent didn’t care..I told her im flying back tmrw and can’t come back again..

she said nothing can be done b4 tuesday..I went to my center anyways and thr was no-one to help except a small notice saying exam is cancelled and you will be informed (btw i didn’t recieve any email frm them)..then I went to IIMB but the guard said tht no-one is thr today is sunday (so y were they having thr xam on sunday?)…

i also have written an email to prometric but did not get any reply and im not even hoping that anything will happen now..i’ll fly back tomrw..my cat voucher, cat prep and the bangalore trip all has been a sheer waste of time and money!!!!

i feel sad about the fact,IIM is d place,who will teach us management and, all this is happening.. hw r they managing the situation.. its unfortunate…:(

It’s a pity that IIMs have not responded to the situation! They are a disgrace to the country, they are taking best brains of the country and spoiling them.
I thought IIMs would set the best examples, something like E.Sreedharan did with Delhi Metro! One thing is crystal clear to me, IIMs should not be your aspiration in life! It should be your passion! Don’t waste 2 years leaving work and preparing for CAT. Just try to do what you love, create passion for your work or change it. Decide whether IIM is the best available option for you. If yes, be skeptic about it and have a backup plan because CAT is NOT the MOST IMPORTANT DAY in you life. CAT is just another exam and I rate this exam below GMAT, IIFT, SNAP and XAT because we hardly see problems in these papers and at the end you DONT FEEL CHEATED!!!
May god help students of IIMs, they worked so hard to get into something that they will regret the whole life! and YES THEY DO (I am ONE :( (

hi guys….. so it basically boils down to “CHAOS MANAGEMENT” this time for the CAT aspirants above everything else.
i went to give the exam at around 1.15 pm for the 2nd slot and came to know that my exm has been cancelled and is to be rescheduled . Till now i haven’t got any SMS or email from Prometric as a formal notification.

all i want to know now is whether any of the suffered candidates (including Day 1 & Day 2) have got a revised date till now, and if yes, then what dates are being given to them, does it fall within the 10-day window or not ??

CAT can do anything…today my test was scheduled at 10 in Heritage Institute of technology(IILH9), where the test was supposed to be cancelled…i just went from hostel to check…nd surprisingly…they called me for the test…such a feeling 3 students in a big hall!!!!!!!

Some very quality posts here. Its very much true that if this is the quality of the CAT and IIM organising committee , you can pretty much expect what management they teach and the quality of future managers , lol . Every year they try to dish out the unexpected , well this year they got a taste of their own medicine and the IIM/Prometric own an public apology but with the sense of false pride they have , they hardly will apologise.
Students here in India think they will only make a mark if they graduate from the coveted IIMs/IITs. Anyone with Intelligence can make a mark. Show me 1 guy in India’s Forbes list who graduated from IIM and and joined a JOB to make his billions.
People have all right to be cynical here after spending their whole day waiting in anxiety and stress. This is no Agni pariksha or whatver , If someone is so much interested in joining a MBA “Placement centre” , why care for petty IIMs , go for Harvard , Wharton , Chicago Business School.
Cat is a NATIONAL ASSET , what a joke. Anshul you are very much right, what value addition to students can be there in just some monotonomus rigorous teaching.

Online registration is done everywhere from IIFT, SNAP to SBI clerical exams , havent seen anything troublesome like CAT registration page. Now this server fiasco during Exams. Well , now you can pretty much guess the reliability of the Results. The IIM directors should apply for GMAT or IIFT/SNAP/XAT next year to learn some proper management basics from other B-schools :P
Will be great to see how they calculated 10*2 =20 different sets of question papers on the same level.

with all due respect to what u have achieved,and keeping in my mind that you are trying to cheer us up we cannot shy away from the fact that when the exam is over when all the dust settles down what will remain is a lingering doubt in mind of cat takers that what just passed now was a catastrophe,and lets face it iims are behaving in a dautocratic fashion and “experimenting”with emotions of over 2 lakh aspirants,cat has become a sham and yes for all you people out there abki baar wohi niklega jisne khoob prayers ki hogi coz forget about uer ability its a plain luck game this time-aazma luck aazma….and watch as the “spectacle” of cat 2009 unravels and becomes a laughing stock wish cat learns from iift and others varna its very soon that cat will fade away into oblivion..after all evolution is survival of fittest and seems cat is going the dinosaur way

IIM Indian Inst. of Management and Prometric both are very well known and famous name in thier own field, Prometric was awarded with 40$ dollar project by IIM’s and still they havent come up with anything big server and network still crashing and students were never aware of this fact. May be this is the first time CAT going online but guys this company is not conducting its first time online exams and prometric still giving sucha lame excuses of virus attacks as a network engg. this surely is chaos and prometric should come blame himself rather then giving lame excuses and Guys can u Please tell me. Anyone who was not able to give exams have thier re-schedule dates ???

Thanks to prometric people, my college authorities’ mismanagement seems to be infinitesimaly small to me! My coolege has risen in my eyes.. thanx to prometric people.
