Update: Nirma has an upper limit of three years of work experience, says Director

Prof C. Gopalakrishnan Dr. C. Gopalkrishnan, Director Institute of Management-NIRMA University wants to stabilize the current expansion in the institute before starting the institute’s very own Management Development Center. He also wants to start MBA programs in sectors such as health care and tourism as he believes that growth in niche sectors need a management backing. In the interview he talks about the salient features of IM-NU

What is the unique principle followed by Institute of Management-Nirma University?

IM-NU is an institute for social responsibility and is thus a not for profit establishment. The fees charged for a particular course only covers costs and there is no surplus. All the institutes in Nirma University strive to provide quality education rather than make profit. We also strive to make the students aware of their surroundings so that they become decision makers and managers.

What are the steps taken to make the students socially aware?

In the MBA program, the students have to necessarily work with a non-government organization (NGO) and make real contribution there. This is arranged by the institute. They teach the workers in the canteen, the construction laborers and their children to read and write on a daily basis even though they have their own hectic schedule to follow. They also keep conducting blood donations camps, art of living courses to develop an understanding of India.

IM-NU has recently increased the number of seats from 120 to 180. Do we see a decrease in the percentile cut off in CAT too?

The seats have been increased by 60 but the percentile cut off in CAT will remain the same that is at 90 percentile and above.

What do you look for in a candidate at the GD-PI stage of the admission process?

When a candidate is invited for a GD-PI session at IM-NU we look for qualities such as good communication skills, his knowledge of his own domain, general awareness and most importantly his leadership qualities.

Are existing students from NIRMA university preferred over candidates from other universities?

Our aim is to get the best candidates in the institute from across the country, thus there is no preference given to any student or university. We want the MBA class to have good diversity so that students can learn more about their country as a whole.

Please tell us more about the Family Business and Entrepreneurship MBA Program. How is it different from the regular MBA program?

The Family Business MBA program is for candidates who already have a business running in the family. In the first year of this program, the students are taught the general principles of management and in the next year they are supposed to prepare a workable, bankable business plan. This program essentially helps students to either expand their current businesses or start new ones. It is different from the regular MBA because a) We do not let the students from the Family Business and Entrepreneurship MBA program to sit for placements, thus they have to necessarily return to their existing set ups and b) The curriculum of this program stresses more on small scale business management, entrepreneurship and other such courses. The curriculum has been designed by talking to existing entrepreneurs and from the curriculum followed by schools (mainly in the west) who have the same programs.

What is the strength of the faculty at IM-NU? How do you make sure that the students get the best of the teachers?

We have currently 31 faculty members on board with us. Counting all internal and visiting faculty, the student to faculty ratio in the institute is around 1:10. 65 percent of the faculty have completed their PhDs and we are looking over a period of a year and a half for 100 percent of them to complete their PhDs. There is an elaborate performance management system for the faculty and we rate them according to the feedback given by the students, their research work and publications. We also do not burden the faculty with a large number of courses so that they may deliver their best.

How often is the curriculum revised in the institute? Have you added or deleted any courses due to the recession?

We have a system in place for totally revamping the curriculum every two years; however we do not bring in changes in it due to an incident. Minor changes though are initiated by the faculty and it follows a process of being discussed by alumni, industry experts before finding its way into the classrooms. To keep the students updated of the recent happenings in the business world we keep organizing regular conclaves and lectures by experts.

What about placements? In comparison to the past year, what are you expecting the situation to be this year?

In Placements 2008, although eventually we placed 100 percent of the students, we could only place 70 percent of the batch during the scheduled ‘placement week’. However things are looking up in 2009 with many companies agreeing to come to campus for placements. Last year, 25 percent of the batch was placed in PSUs and we are hoping the trend will continue this year too. Placement 2009 will surely be easier than 2008.

There is a general perception amongst the people that IM-NU does not favor candidates with work experience. Is this true?

With over 60 percent of the batch made of students with work experience, I can safely say that this is not the case. However, we do have an upper limit of three years of work experience of a candidate. This, due to the belief that a candidate with more years of work experience does not necessarily add value to his work.

Update: A candidate with more than three years of work experience can apply to IM-NU, however, the more number of years of work experience does not put him at an advantage. This can also be inferred by the fact that the average work experience in the present class of IM-NU stands at two years.

“candidate with more years of work experience does not necessarily add value to his work” ?????

Can someone explain

iMPERAToR
#12 October 27, 2009, 11:44 pm

non – profitable: then where does the money go that is charged as fine for bunking lectures, or the money taken for books that are forced upon the students without giving an option to avail them from open market.?????

IMNU – DIDN’T HAVE 100% PLACEMENT. STUDENTS HAD TO OPT OUT AND THEREFORE THE INFORMATION IS INCORRECT. (FOR 2008)

LOT OF FOREIGN QUOTA SEATS, LOTS OF BACK DOOR ENTRIES

turtle_abhinav
#13 October 28, 2009, 12:23 am

clarifying some of the doubts:-

Books are never forced upon the students but some initial amount is taken by every B-school, just to have same books for all the students and and also to make sure that students can avail books at cheaper prices (as Institute will be purchasing in bulk) , and as far as i believe IMNU is one of the few institutes who give you the details of this expenditure (when asked) and every year they return back the remaining fees taken for books and other printing material, some people get to say these things just because IMNU has clearly mentioned the book charges in their fees breakup while some do not.

Regarding foreign quota seats. Percentage of NRI seats are clearly mentioned in the brochure and it never exceeds the same.

mansham
#14 October 28, 2009, 12:24 am

Being a student of IMNU for last 1.5 years, I have never been imposed fine for bunking classes, though IMNU is strict on attendance and that is not a wrong thing by any standards.
Books are not forced upon students, faculties prescribe the books according the course designed by them and those books cost us lesser than the market, obviously not comparable to second hand books :D
There are 15% seats reserved for NRI candidates as any other colleges, and IMNU is not known for back door entries.
IMNU did had 100% placements last year and none of the students were forced to opt out of placements. There were very few students who didn’t got the desired profiles due to recession hit market, thus opted to join there family business or looked for job on their own. College facilitated placement for the whole batch.

Please do not make false allegations.

Anubhav Sood
#15 October 28, 2009, 12:31 am

Hello all,
Just to clarify the questions raised by Imperator…..
WIth due respect, the money charged for bunking lectures has yet not been collected ever from the students. It is an exercise done to just remind students that they can be fined and that, administration wants the students to value the money they hav paid for the course.

Books, not all 120 students wud want or wud be able to go to the market that is around 25-30 kms frm the institute and get the books frm there. Hence the insti arranges for books there itself in the insti for which we need to pay. And since a yes or no cant be askd frm students before every term, this arrangement is made.

And 2008 mein every single person got placed in the first 4 days of the placement week except fr one girl, who opted out. In 2009 too there has been absolutely no one left who hasnt got placement. The whole batch got placed eventually.

Please do write in case u require any other clarifications.

Regards,
Anubhav Sood

“due to the belief that a candidate with more years of work experience does not necessarily add value to his work”
I do not know what Dr. Gopalkrishnan wants to convey with the above statement. Purely Bakwaas statement !!!
Does he mean candidates with =5 yrs. of work ex. our respected “washing powder” NIRMA just goes opposite.

#17 October 28, 2009, 12:50 am

@kumar2010:u need to brush up ur RC kumar….if u read the Dr.Gopalkrishnan’s statement carefully,u will realise that he has used the phrase “does not necessarily add value”.This means that it may or may not add value. Moreover its the institute’s take as far as deciding such conditions are concerned.
So please make some “informed” and “intelligent” comments in future.

Hi Students from IM NU Pls clarify , I was planning to apply for IM NU this year . I have 38 months exp as of date. Am I eligible to apply or is it that that would be decided only after the GD PI Process is done . Pls clarify I was planning to apply for this

amitm_2009
#24 October 28, 2009, 5:42 pm

I have already purchased application form of NIRMA and I have more that 5 years of exp. If Institute has any such reservations on upper limit they should mention it in prospectus or Application Form, that applicants with less that 3 years will be prefered. At least we will not waste money in purchasing form.

“This, due to the belief that a candidate with more years of work experience does not necessarily add value to his work.” – The statement of the respected director of an institute is totally crap. Even though i m a fresher, i believe strongly that Work-Ex matters a lot….

Guys just chill, it is a classic case of misunderstanding :)

To clear all doubts here is a piece of information for you

IMNU MBA FT 2008-10 Batch:( Work Ex data )

67% Work Ex Students

10% =/< 3 years

5 % <more than 3 years

Couple of students with 5 years of Work Ex from IT & Banking Industry.

So there is no reason for more than 3 years work ex mba aspirants to be apprehensive about their admission into IMNU.

Come, Learn & Enjoy Lateral Placements !!!

What does that mean candidate with more years of work experience does not necessarily add value to his work” ?????
Lok at ISB whith candidates having almost 10-20 yrs of exp.
What does he imply by this. Its exactly opposite

#32 October 29, 2009, 12:46 pm

Hi All, I also asked the same thing (as cool.macho7 and others) but my friend katoch(see comments above) suggested me to improve my RC .. :)

To katoch, the word “may or may not” is used by confused persons. e.g. I will not necessarily pass the exam, I do not necessarily like it etc. etc.
Make firm comments yaar,…
As far as Institute’s TERMS & CONDITIONS are concerned, Institute has full authority to do that. But we also have the full authority to make comments on that. After all we are in a Democratic Country and its our fundamental right – freedom of Speech.

Jason
#33 October 29, 2009, 2:37 pm

The statement on work experience may be seen in the context of admission for an educational programme.

The Institute considers 3 years of work experience as optimal and maximum weightage for the work experience component is given to the candidate with 3 or more years of work experience. Therefore, the work experience beyond 3 years may not score any additional point in the selection process. It doesn’t mean that candidates with more than 3 years of work experience are not considered for admission.

In short, “may not necessarily add value” does not mean in the context of organizational work situation but in the context of learning and contributing to learning in the classroom in a particular environment.

@ Apoorv
After reading the article director has spoken to media com and given his clarification pertaining to statement highlighting upper limit of work ex for applicants.

If you want a written clarification or a mail from director side to clear this misinterpretation, the institute’s media com would send an undersigned letter from director.

Also I humbly request you to change the headline of the article which is giving wrong information to the aspirants.

Ok IMNU Guys (Especially from Media Committe )- was stuck with some of the bugs in my head after I read the Article and then the comments & clarification on them

1. How does IMNU evaluate if a candidate that has more than 3 years of exp will necessarily add value – I mean IMNU Shortlists candidates based on SOPs and Essays apart from their CAT Scores.

So how they come to the conclusion that majority of those selected at Nirma and have more than 3 years of exp will necessarily add value (U cant communicate everything in a 15-20 min Interview)

2. What if due to Recession – Majority of the Applicants – lets say 70% of them who clear cutoff have more than 5 yrs exp apply – what will IMNU do?

3. This is the most interesting one

MBA Full time – Admission details say

“An additional score upto 10 points for work experience will also be given for full-time work experience at managerial level in a professional organization”

Lets take an example of a professional org named HDFC/ICICI Bank- a GOOD candidate can become an AM within 1-2 years of tenure with the firm – whereas it will take atleast 4-7 years for a good candidate to become an AM in any Financial BPO or KPO.

How does IMNU weigh both situations

Cheers,
Shyam

Clarification given by the Media Comm of IMNU is sufficient …. but still if you have doubts which ssu039 has raised … then you should write a mail to the institute to get the response. Also specify the source from which the doubt came … so that you can get an official/authentic response (authenticity requested by Mr. Apurv Pandit) …. hence all your doubts will be solved properly …..

#39 October 30, 2009, 10:37 am

@ssu039.. If you have work exp more than three years than IM-NU will not necessarily be awarding you extra points on work ex parameter. Say u have 3 years of work ex and given maximum of nine marks out of 10 on work exp parameter then it is not necessary that other guy with 4or5 years of work ex will get 10/10.
It all depends upon how well you communicate your gained knowledge while working to the interviewer. I hope it clarifies your doubts

I can simply say that is college is an excellent and an ethical college. the college as well as the seniors here always give the true picture about the college. the placements last year out here were good seen in context of other colleges and the infrastructure here is excellent.i had final calls from some of the top 15 colleges in India and had I not made it to MDI i would have certainly taken admission in IMNU leaving a number of so called top colleges-especially in NCR, famous for back door entry and fake news about their placements.
